Madewell, J. Crew's spin-off store, finds a home on King Street

New Crew on the Block

If you love J. Crew quality but prefer big open skies to cocktail bars, then you’ll love Madewell. And lucky for us, the J. Crew offshoot is opening a new location, 282 King St. on Tues. Feb. 18.
And it is an offshoot. There's much less prep on the hangers of the store and more work-a-billy type looks. Inspired by a Massachusetts workwear label, Madewell stocks high-quality denim, sweaters, button ups, and cardigans. Of course, they make it cute while functional — and their T-shirts are to die for.
Madewell, which launched in 2006, has slowly been expanding across the country, and the Charleston store will be the first in South Carolina.
However, one of the few things the brand shares with its parent company are the prices — pair of jeans for $125, a dress for $160, flannels for $80 — you'll be happy to know that Madewell offers a student discount, 15 percent, with a valid I.D.
And if you're into shopping for a cause, Madewell does that too with a percentage of their profits going to charity. Teach for America, which promotes intercity education, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are two of the biggest beneficiaries.  he brand also prides itself on environmental responsibility, implementing waste and energy reduction measures.
To see some of the goods, head to madewell.com.
