You can’t throw a chunk of pimento cheese without hitting a food truck in Charleston. The refurbished delivery trucks have turned the tide in the restaurant business by making quality food accessible for businesses without a brick and mortar store. Amanda Stephenson had recently started an online boutique and was shopping around for a storefront when she went to a Food Truck Rodeo last year. “I kept wondering, ‘Why can’t I use one of those trucks to sell clothes?’”

With the help of her husband, Stephenson found and rebuilt a truck in six months and opened the Rolling Rack Mobile Boutique. It features dressing rooms, clothing racks, and air conditioning for those hot summer days. Since July, Amanda has been driving to private parties and local events like the Southern Ground Festival and the SHE Expo to get in front of crowds who may have never found her in a storefront.

Unlike other clothing boutiques, Stephenson’s products are all under $50 and change from week to week. “I’d like to say I’m a smart shopper," says Stephenson. “We really have to hunt and dig for items that are trendy and affordable but are still of good quality.” The lack of storage on the truck allows for quick product turnaround so you can browse totally new inventory each time Rolling Rack rolls around.

Though she doesn’t rule out having a permanent store eventually, Stephenson is proud of the experience she is able to give shoppers with her novel truck. “When I go to events, people are there to have fun. Coming aboard and buying a $30 shirt isn’t going to break their wallets, whereas finding a $100 dress at a boutique would.”

Shoppers can book the truck for two hours for groups of more than 8 people and receive 10 percent of the total sales as a discount off their own purchase. You can also order from Rolling Rack’s online store which currently features lots of tribal prints, flowy blouses, and game day apparel rollingrackboutique.com.
