Belk turns 125 years old this year, and in celebration they are opening a pop-up shop on King Street, hosting a special reception, and sponsoring Charleston Fashion Week.

William Henry Belk and his brother Dr. John Belk established the department store in Monroe, N.C., in 1888, and the company is now in the third generation of Belk family leadership. “It is important for people to know that Belk is still family-owned. Most people don’t realize that,” says Susan McWatters, vice president and regional store manager of Belk at the Citadel Mall.

The King Street pop-up shop will only be open through the month of March. Belk@341 King will host a special reception on Thurs. March 14 from 6:30- 8:30 p.m., where guests can discover designs by talented southern designers including the Cynthia by Cynthia Rowley collection. The store will be taking donations at the door that will go to support Lowcountry AIDS Services, and if you spend $50 in the store you will receive $10 off. The reception will also include live music by local Brazilin guitarist Duda Lucena, refreshments by Pampered Palate, and a secret signature Belk cocktail.

Belk@341 King will feature designs from some of the winners of Belk’s 2012 Southern Designer Showcase competition, including Megan Masters from Mt. Pleasant, Southern Frock by Emily Newnam, Stone Morris South by Rosalie Morris, and more. “We wanted to give an opportunity to showcase the winners of the 2012 Southern Designer Showcase competition, and it fits the theme for upcoming Charleston Fashion Week,” explains McWatters.

This is the first year Belk will be a major sponsor at the Charleston Fashion Week, and the store will have its own spot in Marion Square for Belk Night on Thurs. March 21. Belk Night will feature a fashion show in the Belk Tent showcasing three main style statements from Belk. “These events are a great way to get our customers involved in celebrating 125 years of Belk,” says McWatters.

Belk is also hosting 125 days of giving, service, and prizes happening now. For more information, visit belk.com.
