Marysia basks in Fashion Week afterglow, plans next steps

Charleston designer will soon move to New York

It was her second time at Miami’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM, and local designer Marysia Reeves nailed it. Models strutted the runway wearing oversized bamboo hats, rocking a retro pin-up style with pink and khaki tones dominating the color palette. Marysia, who won the Emerging Designer award at last year’s Charleston Fashion Week, said this time around, she was more comfortable and familiar with her production team, which created the perfect circumstances for her to unveil her latest line of swim and resort wear.

Top magazine editors praised Marysia for bringing back the high-waisted swimsuit last year, which was spotted in several shows on this year’s runways. “That was the best compliment ever,” she says, “coming from a Fitness Magazine fashion editor herself.” The fashion world has kept a close eye on Marysia, so it’s not surprising. A swimsuit from her summer collection was featured in the June issue of Vogue, and the designer herself was recently featured in Coastal Living in a spread about her Folly Beach home.

Marysia Swim’s trademarks have consistently been feminine, girly touches like tutus and ruffles, and while the line seems to have expanded in terms of edge, the designer remains true to her signature style. “I think my line will always be delicate," she says. "I’m just getting better at designing swimwear that fits the body as best as possible. This year I have smaller details like loops at the neck and leg openings, little functional buttons, braided straps, and sheering, which are all very feminine touches. The colors are soft and organic.”

With lines at Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie already, Marysia is shifting her focus to her kid’s line, Bumby, named after Ernest Hemingway’s first son. She’s excitedly taking the new collection to a children’s trade show in New York this week, anticipating positive feedback. Marysia plans to design more resort pieces, but to stick to spring and summer collections.

Ultimately, she plans to sell her home at the beach and open a showroom in New York. But until summer is over, you can find her catching waves at Folly. Wearing her own designs? “Of course! I have a few favorites.”
