Charleston's most dapper male dressers have a new reason to head down to King Street. Designer Billy Reid was selected out of six finalists as the GQ/Council of Fashion Designers of America Best New Menswear Designer in America on Feb. 12. Reid also won the award in 2001.
Reid, a Louisiana native, has seven stores throughout the U.S., one of which is located in Charleston. Reid has contributed to Charleston Fashion Week with shows in the past, but he is not on the schedule for this year.
After 9/11, Reid moved to Alabama, where he started his Billy Reid label in 2004. “He now has seven stores selling clothes you could imagine William Faulkner wearing at his dapper peak, with bold shots of color mixed in at just the right moments,” GQ says. The award is accompanied by a $50,000 cash prize and the chance to create a limited edition Levi's collection for Bloomingdale's. Check out GQ's article here.
Gird your loins, fashion connoisseurs, for it’s the season for fashion to change its colors and hit the streets anew once again. Deals are popping up left and right as stores are shedding their winter coats to make room for springtime loveliness.
One of those shops is Butterfly Women’s Consignment. They're in the midst of their Gambler Sale, with discounts rising every day, reaching up to 80 percent off everything in the store on Sat., Feb. 27. The sale lets you try your hand at Lady Luck — should you buy that fabulous sweater for 60 percent off or wait for the biggest discount? Be careful — it may not be there if you wait too long. Luigi’s extensive collection will include beads that are one-of-a-kind, vintage, antique, and works from his factory in Murano. For more information, call (843) 881-5690.
Although they're opening up shop this month, Love Me Again Clothing will host a grand opening party on March 26, with a $10 suggested donation at the door going toward educational programs aboard the Spirit of South Carolina tall ship. There will be noshes, drinks, and time to shop at the event that will welcome another fabulous boutique for Charleston's budget-minded shoppers.
Love Me Again Clothing is still keeping their signature set of wheels. The Lovemobile will still be in use — "We just wanted a spot where people always know where to find us," Nelson says. And for those who stop by the new shop Feb. 25 through March 5, you'll get five Love Bucks toward your next purchase.
For stressed-out brides-to-be and lovers of beautiful dresses, we have some great news. Downtown Charleston has been graced with two new bridal shops, Fabulous Frocks and Bella Vista — and they couldn't be more different from each other.
Bella Vista stocks dresses catering to those looking for classic dresses with a modern twist. "We really infuse modern with traditional," says co-owner Marcell Steely-Judice. "Our dresses are fun and flirty, but with classic elements and classic design." The staff of Bella Vista takes the time to work with designers and tweak the dresses that fit the southern bride. "Something that works in California may not work in South Carolina," Steely-Judice says. "Most of our gowns have been changed in one way or another with our customers in mind."Customers will find dresses with prices ranging across the board at Bella Vista, but Steely-Judice stresses the importance of every bride, at every price range having a wonderful experience while buying their gowns. "One of the most driving forces of my business is that I want everyone from a $1,500 dress to a $7,000 dress to have the same exact experience and have the same pride in their dress." But, for those who are on the tightest of budgets, Fabulous Frocks is the bridal shop for you.
Fabulous Frocks is a bridal consignment shop with dresses averaging between $1,000-$2,000. While the prices are low, the quality is high, the dresses are beautiful, and there are styles of dresses for every bride-to-be. "My shop is high-end consignment for the recessionista bride who still wants a designer and nice couture gown, but may not be able to spend the thousands of dollars," says owner Sarah Black, who also owns Belle Couture Bridal in Mt. Pleasant. The dresses go through a delicate screening process before making it onto the shop floor. They must be in "excellent condition and cleaned very well," explains Black. She shares the space with Lella Foster Designs, a jewelry designer. Both bridal-gown shops function by appointment, but Bella Vista will take walk-ins. "We're always here," says Steely-Judice. And while these two shops differ in many ways, both owners stress one thing: "Don't bring too many people while looking for the dress," urges Black. Steely-Judice agrees. "It can ruin the experience when there are too many people who all bring their own opinions. A mom or best friend will do."
