Jewelry designer Dalia Dalili loves the '80s

Isn't it iconic?

Posted by Allie Rice on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 2:00 PM

5dd4/1248716729-detail_173_ms-pacman-md.jpgOn Aug. 1, Suite Sole is hosting a trunk show for jewelry designer Dalia Dalili. The show, called "Ironic Iconic," will feature the newest pieces from Dalili's unique line, Mock Couture, a tribute to growing up during the '80s.

Dalili, a graduate of the Charleston School of the Arts, loved the simplicity of childhood, which for her meant long hours at the arcade playing video games like Pac Man and Super Mario Bros. From these treasured memories, Dalili has created a line made up of unique, hand-painted accessories that pay homage to the '80s through quirky designs like cassette tapes and video game characters.

"Accessories are a key staple in any wardrobe; the icing on the cake, the ribbon on a present," says Dalili. Her hand-crafted accessories, affordably priced at $10-$25, are made from plastic Perler beads and come in earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. With each piece, Mock Couture hopes to draw you back to a time when it was okay to eat junk food, and boom boxes and floppy discs ruled the world.

The show is from 6-9 p.m. Rocky Horror will bring the jams, Cupcake will bring the cupcakes.

New stores, big sales, and a few sad goodbyes

Shopping news round-up

Posted by Erica Jackson on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 2:46 PM

e5ea/1248202397-marynorton.jpgWe’re entering the dog days of summer, but the local retail community never slows down. Stores have been busy with plenty of sales, openings, and sadly, a few closings.
A few weeks ago, when everything at Mary Norton was on sale for up to 90 percent, we could smell trouble, but her rep wouldn’t confirm anything. Now the empty storefront says plenty, as does the recent Post and Courier report which says that Mary Norton Inc. filed for liquidation last week. “Court filings show that the company owes more than $5 million, largely to the investment fund that bought a majority stake in her business in 2006,” the article states. Sad news for the lovely local designer, and King Street as a whole.
Susan Michelle Boutique in Mt. Pleasant’s Belle Hall Shopping Center is also closing up shop after seven years. They’re holding an “Everything Must Go” sale July 23-26, featuring shoes, apparel, and jewelry up to 90 percent off. Get there between 9 a.m. and noon on the 23rd for an extra 5 percent off, then get another 5 off if you pay in cash.
Speaking of Belle Hall, the shopping center is hosting a sidewalk sale July 23-26. They’ve got over 60 shops, salons, and restaurants — like II Brunettes, Pink Crocodile Two, Dog & Duck, and Handpicked — so you’re sure to find something you’ll love.
Just a reminder, other stores having major sales right now are Plum Elements and Elizabeth Stuart Design.
Stay posted for a the Mock Couture trunk show at Suite Sole Aug. 1, along with a trunk show at Verbena Salon Aug. 6.
Butterfly Women’s Consignment Boutique recently opened a second location at 428 King — Yay for budget shopping downtown! And Teal is settling into their second location in the Mt. Pleasant Towne Center.

Plum Elements hosting store-wide sale

Discounts of 40-60 percent off throughout store

Posted by Nick Rosser on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Why should you drop by the arts and antiques district on King Street this week? Because Plum Elements (161 1/2 King St.) is having an epic sale, that's why. The sale is going on through Sat. July 25.

Nearly everything in the store is 40-60 percent off with the exception of custom orders, art, some furniture, and most jewelry. And if you mention the City Paper and/or Seersucker & Stilettos, you'll get an additional 5 percent off. Stocked with a wide range of visual and functional art as well as unique home items from around the world, the shop is sure to have some one-of-a-kind items that are worth checking out.

Proprietor Andrea Schenck, who has lived and worked in Japan, has included in the sale everything from hand-crafted Japanese Masao lights to ceramic garden stools with a classic cloud pattern design. And if you're not in town, not to worry. Andrea is happy to take orders over the phone. Give her a call at (843) 727-3747.
