Tree killing newsies should keep the coupons

Posted on Thursday, March 11

Hey popular newspaper that is sending me unsolicited mail. I do not like you cutting down oxygen producing trees to make these mailers. I do not use anything in those mailers. Not even the articals to tell me how to better live my life. Hell I do not even use those coupons that you send me. Though now that I think about it that maybe stupid in this tough ecnomic times. But still if I need those coupons I will take my lazy ass to pick them up and use it when I need them. Thank you!

You do know that trees area a renewable resource and when paper companies cut down a tree for paper they plant two in its place. There are more trees now in North America than when Columbus landed here.

dear realist...where do you get your info from? How can you say there are more trees here now than 500 years ago. That is a bunch of BS! CHeck your neighborhood and count the number of trees. Before Columbus was here your 'hood was FULL...end to end of trees...too many to count.

ALSO the trees replanted by paper companies are pines...almost exclusively and they are soo acidic to the soil nothing else grows around the base of the trees and causes the soil to be less fertile over time.

Do you know how many chemicals are used to produce that computer you are using? Hazardous metals? How about the eco light bulbs you use? If you want to protect the environment sacrifice a few trees build a log cabin, and, well starve yourself and freeze I guess since you can't cut a tree, or kill an animal for food. You could eat acorns from oaks if you can chew them since toothpaste has a salt in it from rayon manufacturing which harms the environment. This is getting too complicated. Good day.

Yes, those trees do produce oxygen(O2), just like most green foliage including crops that are used to produce the herbivores we eat and crops that are consumed directly (rice, wheat, corn, etc).

But where do you think they get the materials to make the oxygen... you guessed it.... that evil CO2 (carbon dioxide). That gas that is going to put Charleston underwater next month!

Really, author, you can't have it both ways. Either CO2 is bad because we will all drown next week from the rise in sea level, or CO2 is good because it allows the population to not die off due to starvation.

I am all for sustainability, but you greenie nutjobs are always talking out of both sides of your mouth. Remember the switch from paper to plastic decades ago. Now are we back to plastic? Or those greenie bags? You can't have it both ways.

Here's an idea, don't waste it. I think people should be able to call their newspaper provider (especially since in many areas you pay for your subscription and delivery) and ask them to stop sending the extra 'junk' coupon flyers. That way we keep up the American spirit of having a choice, but if we just throw them away all the time, we aren't wasting them. Of course, part of the reason more and more of those ads are getting stuffed in there is because no one wants to pay anymore for the newspaper, and yet the newspapers are trying to stay afloat in the face of the internet. Thus, instead of selling a few big ad spots and having costs covered, they have to sell a hundred small ad spots in order to have things covered. This means allowing more and more companies to add in their flyers. Perhaps, we should pay a little more for the newspaper if we don't want the extra flyers? I mean, they are a steal as it is.

Unfortunately receiving these newspaper mailers from the P&C is not something you can "opt out" of. Why? Because they are not databasing addresses, and sending to you individually.

These money-saver mailers are delivered by USPS in what is called a "saturation route." There is absolutely no discrimination as to whom receives them; the cost to mail is phenomenally cheap. Why is that? Because the mail sorters take a plus-four route (that is the four digit code following your zip) and every single little bundle -- for every single deliverable address -- is automatically packaged with these mailers. It's brainless and an automated process; thus instead of costing 40-cents to mail such as first class, it is more like 14-cents per "drop" as they call each deliverable address.

For you whiners, take a peak through it once in awhile, you might actually find something that will save you money. And if you absolutely hate receiving them: please be sure and recycle it!

There are many things that I find wrong with some of these statements. I think it is funny that some of you think that this guy is being the "green police." I see it as he is a tree lover and thinks that trees a beautiful. Having something to look at other than buildings is a good thing I think. I would like to use the motto of the backpackers in my everyday life. That motto is 'leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but photos.' Those footprints are not the theoretical footprints of carbon. These are actual footprints made with feet. Realist, start thinking real. When you cut down trees and top it with concret, asphalt or other like material they are gone and less likely to be replanted. Ken 29404, I am sure this guy realizes this and dose not buy many of them and uses the hell out of then one he has. Its not like he buys one a week and throws it away. Farmlandsc, I agree that some nutjob environmentalist are too forcefull in their message. Just be sure to not say back to plastic. Just an observation. Yea I know my english is horrible and spelling is slack. Politicalblonde, I do not subscribe to the post and still get those things. I am sure there is a way to "turn them off." However, I did not ask for them why send it to me? Irishblueandglold, some people are too lazy to go recycle and have no facilities to do so near by. So with that I am done. Thank you.

Ever see a paper bag wrapped around wildlife? For that reason alone, I use paper bags probably made out of the recycled coupon fliers.
