Learn the law people. If it's a 5 lane road, the traffic going in the opposite direction DOES NOT have to stop for a stopped school bus. Every morning on the way into work, I have to stop on a 5 lane road while about 20 kids get on a bus. One morning a highway patrolman actually got out of his cruiser to motion the traffic in my direction on, and they still didn't want to go. Please learn the law.

You're absolutely correct. I believe the biggest problem with auto drivers is they do not know the law. I wished the press could assist in educating the public on these laws ... just a suggestion.
Check my site out. I am a school bus driver living in Iowa. www.drivinglives.com
Thanks,
The Driver
Ok bus driver in IOWA this is South Carolina and the law is different.... In SC the driver must stop for a stopped bus if the bus is not seperated by a grass median. It is in the drivers teaching manual. And as someone once said to me you can look it up. Now I know it is annoying but its for the saftey of the kids on the bus. Imagine yourself a parent of one of those kids. Now your kid just got killed because she/he was in the median and someone had to turn and didnt see your kid. I am willing to bet that you would be upset that there was no law cars needed to stop for the bus so your kid or kids could safely cross the road. And if there is no such law anymore there should be...
Technically the bus is supposed to pick up kids on the same side of the road, so kids don't have to run across the median. I don't have the SC book in front of me but I believe, nanners, that the poster is correct about a 5 lane road. I have been told by numerous cops here that if there is a median(of any type) the opposite side does not have to stop. While I will agree that it is safer for everyone to stop, and really how much time is truly lost by stopping...not much.
Read the driving handbook. The OP is correct. If you are on a highway with 4 or more lanes, you only stop if you are behind the bus. If you feel the need to check this, it's in the online handbook, page 26-27.
Nanners, I think you are confused yourself. One statement you made said "In SC the driver must stop for a stopped bus if the bus is not seperated by a grass median. It is in the drivers teaching manual." The last statement... "And if there is no such law anymore there should be..." Why don't you get your facts straight before posting contradicting nonsense.
I have never heard of anything other than STOP for a stopped school bus in any of the states I've lived in. I bet the kids haven't either. If they were late for the bus and saw it stopped they would probably run across the street believing all traffic was stopped. I plan to continue to stop no matter which direction I'm going OR if there is a median OR piece of grass OR a cop! I'm not willing to take a chance of hitting anyone or having some monkey see monkey do behind me hit someone. Why don't you just adjust yourself and leave 5 min. earlier or later and quit stressing?
No I was saying that if the law was appeled it should be reinstated. I do have my facts right, however, it has been awhile sense I looked up the laws and they may have changed between then and now. Loki sure has the right frame of mind. Thank you Loki for being safe and not idiotic. I will pick me up a book tomorow to figure this stuff out.
New legislation that took effect Aug. 1, 2007 changed the circumstances in which a driver must stop for a school bus that has stopped to let students load or unload. Section 56-5-2770 of the South Carolina Code of Laws was amended to no longer require drivers on a multi-lane highway -- two lanes on each side running in opposite directions -- to stop for a school bus that is on the opposite side of the road.
The South Carolina law regarding stopping for a bus on a two-lane road remains.
When drivers are approaching a stopped school bus with flashing red lights from the opposite direction, they must stop if they are on a two-lane road. Motorists must always stop when they are traveling behind a bus with flashing amber or red lights.
That should clear things up.
It did not mention anything about a median! So I am still going to stop for a stopped school bus if there is no median... So boo whoo...
Page four and five seems to clear it up... However, I am still going to slow down to an annoying speed to make sure I am not running over anyones child as they may dart infront of you... The change in the law is not a smart or safe one at all. The safety of the people should be the top priority for the government not the convenience of said people...
