The IRS deserves scrutiny on this issue. They broke the law.
What are these posts condeming the victim groups and not the IRS? Turn the issue on it head to serve your ideals?
The Internal Revenue Service's disclosure that it improperly scrutinized certain conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status. As an inspector general report on the practice found, groups with phrases like "tea party," "patriots" and "9/12 project" were targeted for the "Be On the Look Out" or "BOLO" list, and often ended up waiting two years for notice on their status.
Somewhat lost in the furor over the disclosure is that very few liberal organizations appear to have been approved either!!
There is no evidence that groups with words like "progressive" or "Democratic" were targeted. But the numbers do suggest that the universe of nonprofit political organizations is small, and that liberal groups were not approved in droves while conservative ones were subject to endless bureaucratic rigmarole.
This is not just a conservative group issue..aparently the IRS has targeted liberal groups as well.
Its about time we take a harder look at the IRS behemoth.
This should come as no suprise. My own exploration of real conservatism begins with Mayor Riley famously sayin.. All our Citizens should be home in bed at 2am, during the bar closing controversy. Who the hell does he think he is?, i thought. No one person has the same lifestyle or work schedule.
I was a radical liberal up til than and i started to look into it closer.
Just who is more controlling when they get the power in their grubby hands?
Life is messy and fun, full of dangers and hurdles. embrace the journey and live as free as possible. We should help and protect those that need it, but for the majority of us, the more rules the less freedom.
We do need government, but come on, where does its intrusiveness end?
Commenting on your own pieces this way is tasteless, Tara.
"you know the difference between a doctor and God?"
The doctor exists.
These organizations are in place to serve politicos and themselves, NOT to serve and help the public. This is just a way to have political contributions deemed tax deductible and is reprehesible. There seems to be no limit to how low some people are willing to go in order to promote their selfish agenda. All the while sucking back my tax dollars in the name of humanity. Disgusting!
Dennis I need to forward a proposal to you. This matter is regarding monies owed to: DEER VALLEY CT
Dianne Belson neglects to point out just how the IRS has stopped her organization from fulfilling its purpose. She's asking for special status and basically kvetching about poor customer service but cloaking her complaints as victims of political oppression.
The real tip off to her attempt to misuse the requested tax status is the fact that FreedomWorks, the agit-prop arm of the ultra-rightwing Koch Brothers is paying for her to trip to Washington, DC to whine.
Why is this so-called social welfare group "private?" Is the membership ashamed of their involvement? Are the members so scared of being associated with extremist views that they don't want their names known?
They're asking for a special status that basically shifts the tax burden onto others and opens up the political process to secret manipulation by billionaires. Why shouldn't they be required to prove that they're not involved in political efforts?
I would favor abolishing the tax-free status and secret membership of groups in this category that participate in the political process in ANY way.
I think Ima means there are pitfalls to sort-of empowering civilians to do police business... pitfalls like unarmed motherf*ckers gettin' shot over, let's say, a misunderstanding.
Of course, that happens with regular police, too.
The issue is what does the organization do? We all know it's primarily a political organization. the IRS is doing it's job. If it wants to give up its quest for non profit status and file as a political organization, where it's donors will be a matter of public record, it will have no problems. The problem here is that our politics are being taken over by organizations which get huge secret donations through this loop hole. This group wants this status so people like the Koch brothers can pour money into it without the public knowing who is paying for it. Competing groups, including conservative groups, who reveal their donors and actually operate on money donated by their members, including their county Republican party will be at a huge disadvantage. They don't have to pay taxes on the money donated to them, they just have to file returns and disclose who donates. The people making donations know if they donate above a certain amount, that their names and basic information will be disclosed. They can't deduct the donation on their taxes. That's all.
The Charleston County Democratic party files tax returns and disclosures year after year. You can't deduct the money you give to the party. If you give above a certian amount, your name is listed in the reports. We support candidates. We work to influence legislation. We're not a charity.
Time to grow up tea party.
Of course God's not a doctor; doctors almost unanimously believe in Evolution.
*Trayvon Martin.
Anyway: Huh?
to drval: while I agree this place is one of the best in the area, It Ain't Chinatown!
I don't know which NY Chinatown you refer to, but it sure isn't the one I used to hang out in. Again, Chopsticks is as good as it gets around here, but it wouldn't last 6 months in Chinatown in NY or Philly.
Can somebody say Travan Martin?
reminds me of something a career nurse once told me: "you know the difference between a doctor and God? .... God knows he's not a doctor.
Who gives them the right to make people leave that part of the sidewalk, anyway? Isn't that public property?
Go suck a horses cock commie fucks!! Well split the difference later. So we take power from biz owners to decide weather you can smoke in a bar, making everyone go outside, then have them police us once we're their? Talk about ass backwards!
Funny, in Asheville, it was the business owners who wanted to create their own little police force...um, "ambassadors".
