This is a really inspiring story! The beauty of self-publishing is that anyone can do it, however I don’t think people really know how to go about it, what to look out for, or what questions to ask. But soaking up any info that’s out there, especially from other’s experiences and hearing other people's stories, is so helpful! There is a book out called “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” by Helen Sedwick. Her website, http://www.helensedwick.com has a lot of really helpful info along with more about her and the book. It’s definitely a book worth checking out for self-publishers!
Looking forward to Gandolfini's last film. If you were a fan of James and the Sopranos, take a look at SopranosAutopsy.com
In the print edition of this week's CCP, Chris wrote the requisite condolences regarding the shooting, pretty much mimicking what the politicians said. I fail to see a difference. Something bad happens, and its expected that people with the public's ear will respond with platitudes. Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to why the CCP's offerings are acceptable but Haley and Sheheen's are not.
Thank you for pointing that out. It has been corrected.
For every 99 hilarious and awesome Haire of the Dog columns, there's one that's just ridiculous feigned outrage, and that would be this one. Granted, I guess I'm one of those soulless political operatives you mention, but having worked on many campaigns, I can promise you that no one in Haley's campaign or Sheheen's campaign was considering the oneupsmanship of releasing a statement about a tragedy.
Both Haley and Sheheen are elected leaders and public figures. It's perfectly appropriate for them to offer condolences publicly in the wake of a tragedy.
Well, he's profiled on Charleston Thug Life. That's the ultimate thug definition.
He should have already been in jail. That's the common denominator here, it's rare for a law abiding citizen to just snap and commit murder. Most murderers we see in the Charleston area have a history of violent crime, but remain free.
Duh, Ron, thugs are all about intimidating people, blasting their music, disrespect for authority, and feeling entitled to things that aren't theirs, not just being a violent scofflaw. Wait... he was all of those things, too.
HHMMMM, a US workers union aligning itself with an organization that is no friend to the U.S.
A history of crime, violence and antisocial behavior, and yet nowhere have I seen this person described as a "thug." I wonder why that is?
I think there is another creature more deserving of our scorn: a blog writer grasping at pointless straws in order to evoke pointless reactions over nonsense that has no factual basis or relevance to anything, ever.
Bob, Brian, etc., I think you guys give Sheheen, Haley, and, most importantly, their political operatives too much credit. Political players at this level long ago sold their souls for political success. I know bc I have a box of invoices in my filing cabinet. And I got to tell you, Sheheen is one lousy tipper. Cheap bastard.
Give him a few years off his sentence if he names the developers he took bribes from to push the I-526 extension through.
"using an automatic weapon similar to an AK-47"
No, an AK-47 is an automatic weapon (a machinegun). Very few automatic weapons are used in crimes in the US, though they are used in 90% of crimes in Hollywood movies. This guy used a semi-automatic rifle, which has been a commonly owned type of firearm in the US for the past 75 years or so.
Note that all rifles will penetrate normal body armor, every deer hunting rifle in the US included.
does this guy usually write like this? i mean, i can't stand haley, but what was the point of this dumb article? due to its lack of a point, a convincing argument, & considering how short it is, I'm assuming the author totally forgot about the deadline & had about 4 mins to write something before he had to turn it in?? I mean, i REALLY HOPE that that is the reason why this article/op-ed was so f*&^ing stupid.
the wealthier & snottier people of charleston DO ACT LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME. ANYONE WHO CLAIMS THAT THESE PPL ON THIS CRAPPY SHOW ARE SOME HORRIFIC EXCEPTION IS FOOLING THEMSELVES. CLEARLY, EVERY PERSON WHO HAS SAID THIS EITHER IS LYING, IS NOT WEALTHY, IS NOT "OLD CHARLESTON", &/or HAS NEVER CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH ANYONE FITTING ANY OF THESE DESCRIPTIONS. I come from an old charleston family & if i gave my last name, every single one of you would recognize it, almost as much as you recognize the name ravenel...but i'm not going to give it here because i've been embarassed by charlestonians & the "old charleston-carolina yacht club-elite", mainly b/c they're a bunch of fcking hypocrites. My whole life i've grown up exposed to many of the politicians, physicians, lawyers, businessmen, etc doing drugs, sleeping around while they were married, laughing at how dumb some of the people are who elected them (in the politicians' cases) etc. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT GOES ON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: JUST BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T GROW UP IN THAT LIFESTYLE DOESN'T MEAN YOU KNOW THAT IT'S FALSE...DEAL WITH IT. THIS SHOW, & THE IDIOT COMMENTATORS HERE ARE EXACTLY WHY I'M FINALLY LEAVING THIS STATE & THIS REGION IN A MONTH & HOPEFULLY NEVER RETURNING.
The Harrell family are scumbags!
Goes to show, it shouldn't be legal to have weapons at home. Especially assault rifles. Lived below Michael for 2.5 years - was a sweet guy to everyone. And had a dog named Speedy. Was a great neighbor all and all. Incomprehensible that this happened...
Yes, the Italian festival reached out to the American festival. And nothing happened? Why not? Spoleto's mayor came to Charleston, along with other town officials, even spoke at the opening day shindig. Many meetings with SFUSA management (Nigel Redden) and board members....all to no avail.
One wonders what the point of this long piece can be -- other than, perhaps, an opportunity for a canny writer to get the paper to pony up for an expense-account trip, complete with big meals and lots of wine. And he never really answers his own question - why, indeed, did Menotti choose Spoleto? Other than the writer's muddled speculations about power, and being wanted -- complete with quotes from Barber (the nature and complexity of whose relationship with Menotti the writer is too timid to even mention, probably because he failed to do much real research) - he seems to know very little about the much larger picture of the FDM's creation, which involved many people and a great many circumstances and events that are not all that hard to track down.
But perhaps there is another aim here, not so much the combination of romance and practical commercialism that is today's Spoleto, but the rehabilitation of the man Charlestonians have loved to hate since 1993. In that case, the recitation of the "standard" version (albeit greatly shortened and missing some of its most important aspects) of Menotti's biography may serve to begin the process of drawing the veil even further over the already-obscured story of why Menotti left Charleston. Learning from the lessons of the past (no matter that "the past" is to be revered above all else) has always been hard for the Holy City (after all, if a believer is already sanctified, as they say in the Holiness church, what could there be to learn?) and if the difficult lessons to be found in Menotti's departure can be buried under a haze of sentiment, so much the better.
Not to defend Haley, but it is standard for someone in authority to remark on tragic events. This column is disgusting for accusing BOTH Sheheen and Haley of committing some kind of sin for expressing human dignity. Chris, sometimes you can provide unique insight otherwise lacking on local issues in most press, other times your work is all shock value and offers little of substance beyond your acid tongue (pen.... keyboard....). This column is certainly the latter. I am sure though that it will drive traffic to the CP website, and your column, which I suppose was goal after all.
Poor Will. Keeps waking up White.
