The bottom line is that the store was unprofitable, whether due to high rent, high labor costs, poor local management (the least likely as such is the most easily fixed), theft, or just insufficient demand. What are the possible fixes? The most likely is gentrification, as unpalatable as that may be to some. Socialist fixes such as "peoples stores" may sound good to some, but are nothing more than "pipe dreams."
on the heels of your stories addressing the fact that there are restaurants not opening (the Asian woman who was on your cover who had won some TV cooking show) and those who are closing because of a lack of staff (Two Boroughs) it may be time for simple economics. people who work in the hotels and restaurants can no longer afford to live downtown. go a step forward. no workers living in the area means no people to shop at grocery stores. visitors in hotels and air bnb's don't shop at grocery stores. the only thing that will slow this is when there are not enough people to staff the hotels and THEY have to close. maybe we can all move into the hotels. Then the market drives someone to open a new grocery store to satisfy the demand.
Great article. I do want to point out that BRIDGETOWN is the capital of Barbados, NOT Bridgeport. Also, the Saharan dust makes the view on the EAST Coast hazy NOT the West Coast.
BiLo killed that store. Prices almost as high as Harris-Teeter, food not as good. Pathetic bread selection, non-existent cheese & deli items, and they threw out the fried chicken recipe. Along with most of the great people who worked there at the Pig.
BiLo spent months refusing to ticket non-shoppers cars. The lot was full (construction workers and students), but the store was empty (no place for shoppers to park). In the time it took to park, it was easier to drive to Food Lion or Doschers.
Wow, how very sad.

There is also a grocery delivery service that delivers to the downtown area and their prices are comparing with BiLo.
www.BerryD.Com is how they can access groceries and meal kits.
Good luck with that. BiLo's closest competitor was a higher priced Harris Teeter and they still couldn't generate enough sales in their neighborhood to make it worth staying open, so how can you expect another retailer to want to take over the space? these are businesses not charities. The neighborhood has spoken, BiLo listened, simple as that. The column speaks directly of a few local customers and I realize this will create hardship for some, but it takes a whole lot more than a few to keep the doors open. The last few times I was in the store it seemed like there were more employees than customers. You don't survive as a retailer like that.
I'm confused. What does negligent behavior on the part of gun owners have to do with dictatorships and civil liberties? Are you saying gun owners should be allowed to be careless with their weapons? Please elaborate.
Ron would love to live under a dictatorship with no rights. Except he couldn't post stupid rebuttals online because there would be no free speech. Although I'm sure he would tow the party line if it meant to control of its citizens. He is pathetic
The responsibility for the crime of theft lies with the thief. Always. However, if you keep a gun on your person or vehicle for your own safety, leaving it unsecured will absolutely degrade your safety by degrading the safety of society around you. Yes it is exhausting outwitting scumbags, but that's the hand we're dealt.
Isn't one of the gun owner narratives people own guns to prevent criminals from taking their property?
The victims of course (surely champions of personal responsibility and responsible gun ownership) being careless, and through their own pointless negligence, allowing tools designed to harm or kill to be taken from them in a way that caused no struggle or assault or battery or other trauma.
But yes, let's totally equate that to rape.
How about if it's proven you say something false, you lose your right to free speech?
How about if it's proven your car was easily stolen because of your negligence, you lose the right to drive?
How about if it's proven you were easily raped because you were drunk and not able to clearly give or deny consent, you lose the right to accuse your rapist?
Or maybe we should blame the criminal and not the victim?
How about if it's proven a weapon was easily stolen because of your negligence, you lose the right to own a gun... period, the end...
If only those vehicles had been armed this wouldn't have happ...oh wait.
In other words, most of the guns were stealable because of the stupidity of the owner. How about tacking an intelligence test onto that carry-permit?
Oh look! Victim blaming!
Why worry about ants when you have international investors reshaping the environment wholesale?
Just great, piss ants on steroids. Something else for me to have nightmares about.
This saddens me in such a way that my heart literally hurts. Please do not give up on this case. This little boy deserves Justice.. it's an embarrassment to our justice system! Love from me to you for your sincere concern for this little boy who suffered a horrific death due to ignorance and racism.
