Not good. I roll bigger joints than the tacos at this place. Beers are overpriced and often you are likely to have one of their patrons spill a drink on you. I'll take the Taco Bell over Taco Boy.
Taco Boy is the worst! Beer is good. Don't eat anything that restaurants try to make Mexican...Not very good seafood in New Mexico...Santi's is horrible, but the best junky Mexican fare in Charleston..
Taco Boy should be gone by the time this ink dries...
Their tacos are 4 dollars each and it takes 3 to 4 if you want to have a decent lunch/dinner. So your out 12 - 16$ and you've just eaten a few tacos. Add some chips & salsa 3$ more and a crappy Corona for 4.50 - you've just spent 19.50 on 3 tacos, some chips and a beer. This place is a total rip off.. their food isn't that good either.
This place has a great building and location (except it is always really loud inside), and it also has slightly above average food and drinks selection for a Mexican restaurant IN CHARLESTON. The tacos and food in general is way better at La Nortena, plus its cheaper. However, La Nortena is in North Charleston and not filled with people, so its not that fun usually. I don't love this place, but it is not terrible (especially not just because of no happy hour, jesus).
Don't get why people try to defend this place, its awful. Only place i have ever heard of that doesn't offer happy hour specials. And the food is garbage.
I had been dying to eat at the Taco Boy since we moved here. We rode to folly last weekend & did so. This place was so disapointing! The salsa was bland, my shrimp taco was like rubber. They do hit the spot with the corn tho! It was amazing! I will prolly try them again if nothing else but to eat the corn & there mojitoes were awsome too! Also the staff was really nice & quick service.
I thought this place was going to be amazing but was a little disapointed. The food was ok. I will say there salsa is good way better than taco boys. My husband & I each had two small tacos, he had a beer, me a bloody mary & the chips salsa & the bill was $45.00! For just ok food it was overpriced. For that kind of money I would rather walk over to EVO. Unless they change the prices won't be back.
Myself and some friends had dinner at Zocalo earlier this week, the food was great , the service was awesome and drinks were jam up. If you want to go somewhere that has authentic street food this is the place, i have eaten a lot of Mexican food in this town and this place hits it on the nose, and as a far as the service goes, we had the big guy as our server, i think his name is dillon(sp?), he is def the go to guy for awesome service and knowledge of tequila. we will definitely be back to zocalo often for great service and food !!!
I have eaten at Zocalo five(5) times and am really looking forward to going back. I love the menu, the food and the prices. I live at Folly and would drive 30 minutes to eat at Zocalo before I would go 2 minutes to Taco Boy. There simply is no comparison. I have read reviews by those who feel the prices are too high. Now I do not know about the alcohol drinks, because I do not drink, but I find the amount of food you get for the money almost unbelievable. Zocalo is an asset to Park Circle. See you soon!!
Food was tolerable but nothing spectacular and way overpriced. Service is slow and not very good. It's pretty much Taco Boy, but even more expensive with an "upscale" attitude because it has a lot of tequilas.
I live in the neighborhood and wanted this place to do well at first, but if they don't change direction, I'll be surprised if it lasts the winter once they close the patio.
If you're coming to East Montague for lunch or dinner, you should go to pretty much any other place on the street first. If you're looking for great Mexican food, go on down Spruill to Santi's, or up Rivers to La Nortena, and order the Mexican tacos. Much better food, much less pretensiousness.
My fiance and I have eaten at Zocalo several times and love it! The presentation is great, food's even better - the salad with jicama, pickled onions, and avacado is wonderful, as are the other dishes we've tried. I'm so glad to have an authentic Mexican place in the neighborhood, and look forward to summer margaritas on the patio with live Latin music!
They have a really good opportunity to have a cool restaurant but are slowly but surely blowing it. Every day I talk to neighbors in Park Circle that wonder how much longer they are going to be able to hang on. The sentiment is pretty consistent, food is good but inconsistent and service is usually nice but pretty slow and weak. Really would love to have another great restaurant on East Montague and Zocalo has the potential but just hasn't lived up to it yet.
I completely disagree. I think the food is great, the service is awesome and the drinks are always strong when I go there. Then again, I know what to order from frequenting the Folly Taco Boy: FROZEN SCREW DRIVERS BABY! Haha, no but really. I don't know what was going on when you 4 people went to Taco Boy, but all I have to say is bad reviews travel way quicker than good ones. For those of you who are reading this who haven't tried it: give it a try. Doubt you'll be disappointed.
Really wanted to love this place. Food and drinks were great, though took forever to get out. Service was terrible.
I've eaten at Zocalo three times since the soft opening and in general I'm impressed both with how together they were at the opening and how they've improved on any initial qualms I had. The addition of Steve Davidson (sp?) in the kitchen is noticeable. The interior decor is very adult and terrific for an evening out with friends. The patio, Like JoshL725 pointed out, is going to be awesome this summer! I look forward to them adding more in the non-meat realm but it is already pretty damn good.
Great lunch but limited menu. all taco options are meat. it would be nice if they had fish taco's and shrimp taco's on there. the patio is HUGE! this place will be rocking by summer time!
Pathetic.. one word to describe their fish tacos. The mahi fish that was in the taco was the size of my middle finger.. ONE little 1" x 4" piece.. less than an ounce of fish, nice lettuce though. The tortilla was gummy like it had been nuked in the microwave. I ate there a few months after they opened and there was at least 3 pieces of mahi fish in one taco then. What happened?? The marguerita I ordered, paying for quality tequila, was very scant on the tequila ... I had 2, so it was no mistake that it was light. Too bad mini-bottles are gone, at least you knew you were getting what you paid for. I love the outdoor space but come on, if you want dinner to be flour tortillas and chips and salsa, you will do well here. The place was packed last night but that should not be an excuse for their quality of food or drink if they want to keep people coming back. MHO.
Anyone who does not make me choose a Sangria or Margarita, but instead puts frozen margarita IN my Sangria, gets my vote. I love the large portion of delicious guacamole - - large enough that I don't resent sharing. The corn on the cob with the spicy sauce is just delicious. And the tacos make my inner foodie very happy.
Re: “Zocalo”
Went for lunch last week and the food was solid, my only problems were with the wait staff. My friends and I got there at about 11:15 on a Tuesday morning dressed in ties, obviously having come from work and the waiter was really pushing us to order beers. I'm not turned off by the idea of beers at lunch but we were obviously in the middle of our work day and the waiter's pushiness made us uncomfortable. Also we could hear him talking to the people at the 2 tables near us and the conversations were pretty similar, he was pushing the alcohol pretty hard and also using profanity which is a bit unprofessional for a waiter at a restaurant. He probably would have made a good bartender but as a waiter he needed some work. He did make good recommendations on the food and I enjoyed my meal. My only complaint about the food was to do with my side item, the corn puff wagon wheels. Those seem completely ridiculous to even serve. I'm sure the place would be better in the evening or happy hour when I can take my time and enjoy a beer, but when I just wanted to eat it was annoying not to be able to just order lunch without getting pestered about drinking.
