So many weird reviews here! I feel the need to state the following before I share my review: 1) I am not a "Kiawah Snob." I'm a multi-generational middle-class Islander, ok? 2) Get over the location. Mondo's on James Island is ASTOUNDING and they're located in a "strip mall."
So, onto what's really important: THE FOOD. On one occasion, my friends and I share the reasonably priced apps: Mushroom Toast (sounds GROSS, but it's delicious) and the Roasted Apple. The apple was stuffed with this really delicious dressing that was neither too dry, nor two "glue-y." (I've been the victim of stuffing with a paste-like Consistency and was thrilled to find that not to be the case here.)
After a few more drinks, we ordered another round of that damn mushroom toast and I ordered this apple/onion tart. (A very apple-centric menu?) Delicious, delicious, delicious.
During this trip, our service was EXCELLENT. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and really nice. . .especially considering that we were just there for drinks and apps.
I tried Sweeny's again during lunch hours. My lunch-buddy, a visiting Long Islander, took on the Lobster Roll. . .which, I will admit, is too rich for my blood in regards to what I'm willing to spend on lunch. However, my LI buddy said the lobster was delicious and just as good as anything he's had at home. I took on the $10 barbecue chicken sandwich and found it pretty good. My chicken was a teeeeeny bit dry for my taste, but it was really good. Fries = DELICIOUS. Hot, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.
Drinks/beers = cold and never without one!
Service = the first time, it was stellar! The second time, totally passable, but not up to the previous visit's standards.
Location = despite the yammering on about how it's located in a lowly strip mall, they've done a fantastic job with renovations and it's really very lovely. Anyone bitching about the location needs to get over it, get out and travel a little. I've eaten some of the most delicious food in some of the ugliest surroundings.
I'm looking forward to getting back there and trying other things on the menu. I suppose if you have to travel a long way to get there, it might not be your thing. But it's SO NICE to have another "on the nicer end of casual" restaurant on John's Island (even if it's practically across the street from the OTHER "nicer and of casual" [Fat Hen] restaurant on John's Island and not too far from the OTHER-OTHER nice restaurant [Wild Olive]).
If you're out that way, it's definitely good enough to give it a try. The prices aren't hot-dog cart low, but they are NOT as high as some people have suggested. (Not everything on the menu is a lobster roll.)

Recently ate at Eclectic Chef... WOW! All I can say is WOW! What a wonderful sandwich. I ordered a sandwich and salad combo - nothing like any combo I've ever eaten. So much food for the money. Everyone was so friendly.. Great food and Awesome service! How can you not go back?
You are right, being a former employee on the front desk our #1 job was to sell a big repair bill. Several of the items on most boss were not needed. Beware of the inspection process. They get you in on the 19 dollar oil change. It is only to get you in and find problems to try to get you to spend a lot of money. Example. Brake job for 229.00 actual cost was 39.00 for pads and 1/2 hour labor@ 45.00 total should be 74.00 not 229.00/ This is all under the direction of Lynn and John Mulherin
The Shelter Kitchen and Bar is definitely not what I was expecting when I walked into it. As another bar on Shem Creek I was expecting fried seafood and all the other standard foods, but I was wrong. Their appetizers (which are half off on happy our or on Monday nights after 9 for food and bev night) are fantastic. The fried pickles and okra was amazing with the in house made chipotle ranch, and so were the Low country Rolls! (basically a spring roll for southerners, collards, pulled pork, and mustard based BBQ sauce). Even just the basket of fries I've had there before was great, it comes with a really fantastic garlic aioli.
The burgers are huge and superb. About 7 different choices for toppings, and you can opt out of a burger for a chicken breast, fried chicken breast, veggie burger (which is great) and even a Portabella mushroom. I've only had my burger cooked incorrectly once, and it was underdone so I sent it back and they actually recooked an entire burger instead of heating up my underdone burger. I was very impressed with the time it took to get food to the table, (as well as drinks) and the reaction time of managers to get out to the table to make sure problems are taken care of in a proper way.
Drinks do take a little while. But if you look at the bar on any given night, they may seem understaffed at some points. If you order your drink when you're 2/3rds done you will never wait on a drink. If you wait until you're done and then have to wait for your server to get back around when this place is packed, I can understand how people would think its bad bar service. But in reality its just its shear volume of people there. Maybe I just do this cause i'm in food and bev myself. But as a server, I enjoy going to The Shelter Kitchen and Bar, happy servers, happy people, happy managers, and a great overall atmosphere. Will be there again, and again.
I am a fourth generation Johns Island native and in no way am I a debutante. The food is spectacular, the staff is well taken care of, and the ingredients are chosen with the utmost care. If you want a negligent underpaid disgruntle jerk ,that hates his job slopping your burgers together, then go do that. Sweeney's takes care top to bottom. The lowcountry lacks service and pride in the food industry. I am relieved to see our little island taking pride in food. $11 a burger with a fabulous side made by hands of people who have a passion for food and can afford to eat there as well; hell of a deal!!

Try Southern General at the end of shopping strip for good burgers, sandwiches and beer. Also great people.
The layout is indeed confusing, there needs to be a giant "ORDER HERE" sign when you first walk in. But the service was GREAT, from the front of house to back of house. Pizza was really, really great too - and I personally prefer a really thin crust but this regular crust was excellent. I had the Verdura, if you're a veggie lover this will be right up your alley. Great for large groups and kids.
I have been going to Morgan Creek grill for several years. Haven't ever thought much of the service or the food, but love the location. After enjoying a nice afternoon downstairs at the Creek with friends I learned a few days later that they had charged my credit card twice. I called immediately and after speaking with 3 people was transferred to Carla Pope the "manager" who told me "it was a busy day, it was a human error." I totally agreed. Carla said they would refund my credit card for the second duplicate charge, so I asked that the restaurant also pay the expenses they incurred because of their double charge and Carla refused. She told me "its not our fault you can't manage your money." What? As a local who has frequently Morgan Creek Grill for years I cannot believe the outrageous attitude and behavior Carla exhibited. Where is the service recovery? After speaking with the bank today and no refund has been processed I will be contacting the fraud department.
Fuel - Cannot leave a star rating as we were never served.
Just recently, on a past September Saturday afternoon, the weather has turned beautiful, and we strolled the neighborhood and stopped in at Fuel.
Red Flag #1) People standing around unattended. Not crowded, open tables & seats @ the bar. Multiple customers milling at entrance. No Hostess. A sign turned sideways...One side says, 'Seat yourself' the other side says, 'Wait to be seated". No one knows what to do. We seat ourselves in the courtyard.
Red Flag #2). Wait staff walking around but never acknowledge your presence. After several minutes I took a serve yourself approach and went to the bar. No one behind the bar. Returned to seat, waited a couple minutes. Continued to be ignored by wait staff. Go back to the bar.
Red Flag #3) No bartender. Waited. Waited some more. After about 6-7 minutes a bartender appears. Pretends I am not there, walks around the entire bar filling glasses & chit-chatting. After attending to all the customers already served(2 -3 minutes), he comes back to me. "What would you like?"...'May I have a menu please?' He hands me a menu & walks away. Menu lists draft beer and it is obviously inaccurate as I can see taps that are not listed on menu. I guess informing me of 'seasonals' & guest taps is not part of the deal. Since has turned his back on me, I'm not waiting again to inquire.
I go back to my table and ask my party about ordering. We agree to leave. WORST service ever is not fair...again, we were never approached by wait staff. Completely unprofessional & no interest in going back, I could understand poor service if they were busy, but not the case here. Another neighborhood establishment on my Blacklist.
Is it just me or does Foodlover8's review seem like maybe someone working there posted the review? "Golly gosh the burger was ONLY $11 dollars, I usually pay a LOT more for a burger this good". Yeah, sure.
I guess I could be wrong.
The burger I had wasn't 1/2 a pound and the server didn't tell me that the fancy schmancy bread with butter from unicorns was airlifted in from New York.
Great pizza!! A tad on the pricey side for what you get. Sodas are extremely over priced and I didn't see any beers or offered any from the cashier. It took a long time to get the pie too. I think they burned the first one, but no one came by and explained the long wait. I only say this because I watched the whole thing happen in the exposed kitchen area. All in all great pizza. They should definaty utilize their outside space as well.
I've eaten at Sweeney's numerous times and that burger is SO good. My server told me they specially fly in 40% butter brioche buns from New York and that the burger is a half pound. It's also served with soup, salad or fries. I couldn't even finish my plate with the amount of food they gave to me. I've found most places charge a LOT more for a burger that good, including a side. It's kinda silly for there to be so many negative comments on a burger this good for $11. I suggest everyone go and try it, it's one of the best I've ever had.

Toni when you insult someone don't be surprised when it comes back your way. You insulted my beer selection and insinuated I can't do simple arithmetic. Why? Because I didn't give a good review to the restaurant. I comprehend completely Toni, you have a vested interest at Sweeney's most likely as a server or bartender. Sorry if the criticism stings but maybe when you are older and wiser you won't be so fast to belittle others for speaking their mind.
My opinion is that Sweeney's is overpriced but the food was good. I had a bud light draft that set me back $4 bucks which I thought was a rip off. Excuse me if I don't share your high opinion of Sweeney's.
I don't expect they will last through the winter considering the location and price of a meal. If I'm wrong, good for them!
Went recently and shared mussels, pommes frites, and sushi with the table. As always the food was delicious. The bartenders were so busy talking amongst themselves, however, they ignored the patrons. The hostesses acted as though we were fortunate they were paying attention to us. Definitely not up to par with my earlier visits many years ago. Given the sheer number of new and established restaurants that offer both fantastic service and food, there is no reason to go back for a long while.
Thanks for calling me an asshole for speaking my mind Mr. Salidude. Since you couldnt comprehend let me break it down for you, the only part of my comment directed to you personally was that about the beer selection. The rest of my statement was my reflection on the article posted about this restaurant from city paper itself. Someone put their name on this business and as a private owner it would be nice to have local support, you saying youll go when its bankrupt is just plain rude. If you think its overpriced whatever dont eat there, but dont hope a business fails because I (the asshole) tweaked a nerve.....thats really messed up. Im sure your older and wiser so show a little class man.
