This may have been a good place at one time but unfortunately I haven't gotten a fresh dessert at Kaminsky's the 5 or so times I've eaten there. The cakes always taste as though they've been sitting out too long. For delicious cake I would rather go to Saffron, Mrs. Rose's for the Guinness Cake or Boulevard Diner for the Coconut Cake. I would take dessert at any restaurant in town over Kaminsky's.
I should have posted this comment a long time ago. As I drove by Christophe Artisan Chocolatier today, and was reminded of the terrible experience I had with the people who own this business, and I needed to vent about it.
In 2011, I purchased a Groupon coupon for $40.00 assortment of Christophe's chocolates. The deal was run just before Valentine's Day, so I decided to use my coupon on chocolates for my boyfriend, who is a chocoholic. When I called in a week before the holiday, I was told that the chocolatier was swamped with Valentine's Day orders, and they wouldn't be able to fill my order at that time. I understood how busy they were, and decided to redeem my coupon at a later date.
I called them several times, and each time I was given the runaround. I was told to call another number, but no one answered the phone at that phone number. At one point someone took my phone number and promised to call me back. No one called me back, and after numerous unsuccessful attempts to redeem my coupon, I gave up. So I was out $20.00.
If business owners offer Groupon deals and take our money, they should be responsible enough to make good on the deal we bought.
My boyfriend and I were slow to be seated, and I think they were understaffed for a Saturday night, but the hostess and waiter were both very pleasant. I shared a pot of raspberry tea and the delicious cappuccino chocolate torte. I was surprised to find that they had comped our dessert to apologize for the wait!
After reading about "Charleston's Best Desserts" I decided to go to Kaminsky's last weekend to test the cakes--being a cake lover, it is a big deal for me to find the perfect cake. I should have trusted my intuition upon looking at the display case and not seeing anything that looked appetizing. The variety was wonderful, but the presentation and quality were lacking. I will admit that I do a lot of baking at home--organic, from scratch, etc.--and have high standards when it comes to cake. I had both the Hummingbird Cake and A Chocolate Chip cake. While both "looked" good, they were crumbly, falling apart, and dry. Plus, the staff, who seemed to be in a big rush, despite a quiet restaurant, sloppily cut the pieces and thrust them onto plates, caring little for appearance...As a local, I am trying to make my way around the city's bakeries, and I would NEVER return to Kaminsky's. For consistency and quality you are better off going to Baked, The Village Bakery, or Saffron's.
Kaminsky's is my favorite place for dessert. The toll-house pie is out of this world!!!
Poor service. Bad coffee drinks. Overpriced and over hyped dessert. Cake was dry and flavorless. Desserts lack creativity but even if you want "basic" dessert, the quality isn't there.
