Re: “Today's police departments look more and more like occupying armies

Glad to see that I'm not the only one bothered by police wearing the latest "tommy tactical" fashions while waiting at starbucks. Going out to take down the Taliban right after they finish up that latte.

Re: “Is Lindsey Graham gay?

What surprises me more than anything is the lingering dislike some Northerners still hold against the state of South Carolina. Well, ya'll sure do look like you're having fun in Myrtle Beach! Hope you get over the Civil War so we can elect someone like Graham who can defeat ISIS and bring back the economy!

Re: “Is Lindsey Graham gay?

Wow, while you are asking if Graham is gay how about Hillary? Or is that the "elephant in the room" or in her case donkey, since she's a Democrat!

Did he give the speech in German? Of all of the candidates in the Republican field, Lindsey wins for most Hitleresque. We must protect the Fatherland.

"economic recovery"
Any Republican will tell there has been no economic recovery.
Just ask one!

Re: “Lindsey Graham said ‘radical Islam’ 6 times in his presidential announcement

"the South Carolina senator made an early reference to Ronald Reagan's Cold War-era "peace through strength" policies and gave dire warnings about "the enemies that are trying to kill us"

What Graham failed to mention: the enemies allegedly trying to kill us today are the evolution of the terrorists Saint Ronnie supported during his tenure.

Imagine Obama selling weapons to Iran or funding the Taliban or supporting someone like Saddam Hussein the way Reagan did. For some reason I suspect the reaction would be different.

Re: “Today's police departments look more and more like occupying armies

Truthrus, I'm sorry I offended you with the cops' wives on Facebook comment.

I meant it in jest mostly, and had no clue that an actual police officer's wife would respond. I respect what your husband does, I just don't think he needs an assault rifle as a job perk.

While I'm here, I might as well let you in on the little secret that not everyone is a braindead mouthbreather incapable of critical thinking or feel the need to defend everyone in a uniform. To wit, it's entirely possible for me to have a whole army of police friends and still not be okay with the status quo.

Now wrap your head around that. Crazy shit, right?

"We'll put an intern on it, stat."

I demand more than an intern. Ideally, I'd like future Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Bowers to handle this situation.

Re: “Today's police departments look more and more like occupying armies

warwit - Cops used to be armed with sidearms and shotguns in the car and that would still suffice for 99% of hostile situations. You're right that rifles (whether selective fire assault rifles or semi-auto versions) are now ubiquitous in most police situations, though.

What truthrus is referring to is the lessons applied from the Columbine attack - the cops then were trained to wait for SWAT to show up so that's why the two nutjobs had an hour or so in the school while a perimeter was set up and SWAT prepared for entry. As a result, police tactics changed and now they immediately confront an attacker. So, a carbine is useful for that sort of thing, even though it's very, very rare thankfully.

Still, I see police in body armor, helmets, rifles in all sorts of situations. Usually "securing the scene" after normal crimes. Keeping in mind that in the USA more people are killed by "hands, fists and feet" than all types of rifles combined each year. So, it's not like police are facing a serious threat from rifle-armed criminals.
