Post-hardcore Pennsylvania quintet August Burns Red from bring their heavy, technical sound to the Music Farm during a 10-week tour across North America and Europe. Jake Luhrs, former singer of Columbia band She Walks in Beauty, returns to South Carolina with a bigger and better live show and a great new band. August Burns Red debuted their sophomore album Messengers in 2007 on the Solid State label who (they’ve signed big bands from Underoath to Demon Hunter). They spent a year developing the songs, with each member contributing lyrical content from their own personal experiences. August Burns Red’s Charleston show promises intense growling vocals and skilled complex song writing along with an energy packed live performance. A must-see for hardcore and metal fans. —Kelly Stroup

Holy Ghost Tent Revival

Americana is a tricky label — and often a cop-out for describing any act with an acoustic guitar or a southern drawl. But for Holy Ghost Tent Revival, a sextet from Greensboro, it really is the only apt descriptor. Disregard the geographical connection to like-minded tar-heels The Avett Brothers (West on I-40) and Squirrel Nut Zippers (East on I-40), the band’s very name evokes images of century-old American confliction wherein religious piety meets raucous party. Musically, we hear elements of the entire lexicon of American popular music. Vaudeville ragtime, rife with big, swinging horns, meets doo-wop backing vocals and the structural and melodic qualities of Golden Age American pop music. String-band folk and bluegrass collide with rock ’n’ roll abandon. Where the canon of popular music converges in Holy Ghost’s songs, we get not only a sound that is as all-encompassing as a tent revival, but one that is undeniably, and singularly “Americana.” —Bryan Reed
