To help celebrate City Paper’s 10th birthday, we’ve put a special rock ’n’ roll bash together featuring an armful of this city’s best live acts — from the current scene and from City Paper’s earliest days. The party officially kicks off at 7 p.m. (after a private, earlier get-together from 5-7 p.m.) at the Windjammer on Wed. Aug. 22. A total of 14 acts are scheduled to perform on the deck stage facing the beach and on the main stage inside. No cover! Here’s the lineup:
The Diesel Brothers — 5:45 p.m. (Main Stage, invitation only)
David Dunning and Donnie Polk armed with their impressively vast catalog of rock, country, and metal classics.
Guitarists Jason Cooper and Chris McLernon of local party-rock cover band Playlist and long-running local ’80s band Weird Science).
Formed as a sloppy garage band by City Paper staffers in the editorial, production, and advertising department: keyboardist Derek “Dirge” Judson, guitarists Stratton “Seaweed” Lawrence, Jon “Django” Santiago, John “Waterloo” Royall, John “Rabbit” Zara, drummer “Moanin’ Josh” Dybzinsi, bassist/drummer Skip DeBeatte, and multi-instrumentalist Whitt “Don’t Take No Chance” Algar.
Graham Whorley Band — 7:15 p.m. (Main Stage)
Guitarist Graham Whorley, bassist Will Ames, keyboardist Daniel Walker, and drummer Brian Ledbetter do their soulful funk-rock thing.
Peter Alvanos — 7:15 p.m. (Deck Stage)
A dapper native of James Island, singer/songwriter and all-round happenin’ cat. Alvanos spent time with local combos Honey Wagon, The Vroom, Ferns, and others before relocating to N.Y.C. His latest endeavor is an Athens, Ga.-based project called Fabulous Bird.
The Stiff Joints — 7:45 p.m. (Main Stage)
This thirtysomething act — fronted by singer/bassist John Crain and guitarist Marty Parker — specialize in aggressive, riffy guitar-driven rock that only leads to trouble.
Rik Cribb & The Problems — 8 p.m. (Deck Stage)
Local songsmith Rik Cribb (formerly of ska-rock group SKWZBXX and The Cribb) on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, lead guitarist Doug Walters (also of The Secrets), drummer Jeff Mangan, and other guest players.
The Sound Affects — 8:20 p.m. (Main Stage)
A newly-formed power trio featuring two former members of popular “‘80s band” Velveeeta and alt-rock band Honey Wagon — singer/bassist Glenn Horres and singer/guitarist James McKinney.
Cary Ann Hearst —8:45 p.m. (Deck Stage)
Between her activities in the studio and the local stages with the Borrowed Angels and the Gun Street Girls, Hearst consistently delivers soulful, personal, unashamedly ballad-oriented and twangy-rockin’ material.
The Archetypes — 8:50 p.m. (Main Stage)
With a rotation of drummers and bassists through the 1990s, guitarist Kevin Wadley (one of the original owners of the Music Farm) and Joey Allawos and charismatic lead singer Tommy Dew have remained the core of the band’s lineup. Releasing a self-titled album (on cassette) in 1989 and a CD titled Goblet in 1991, they were one of Charleston most popular bar bands. Dew and Wadley will be backed by the members of The Sound Affects for a full-on set this evening.
Guitarist Scott “Mookie” Quattlebaum, singer/bassist Bryon Moore, and keyboardist Jason Moore were hugely popular in town for the funky sound in the 1990s.
Both formerly of Jump, Little Children, singer/guitarist Jay Clifford (pictured) and bassist Jonathan Gray are well-known and loved in the Charleston scene.
Sol Driven Train —11 p.m. (Main Stage)
Versatile, funky, reggae-tinged party band with a spirited energy (likely inherited from their high school experiences in the Wando marching band). Ward and Joel and Phill and Russell and the gang aim to get groovy.
Leslie — 12 a.m. Midnight (Main Stage)
Cool, hard-rock power trio comprised of singer-guitarist Sadler Vaden, drummer Jonathan Carmen, and bassist Jason Fox. Catch Leslie this week or sometime soon before they leave town this fall to share stages with The Mooney Suzuki, Will Hoge, The Trews, and Jucifer.
