Are you a feminist? If the answer is yes — or even if you’re not really sure — you’re invited to attend the Yes! I’m a Feminist event to benefit the College of Charleston’s department of women and gender studies. “It is truly just a party,” says the program’s director Alison Piepmeier (a City Paper contributor). A big party — one expected to draw 400 or so people. “We will have free food from fantastic local restaurants. We will have free alcohol, music, and it’s just an opportunity to meet other people who identify as feminists ... truly a diverse crowd.” Last year Jenny Sanford and Elizabeth Colbert Busch attended, and they’re both expected to be there this year too, as is CofC president George Benson. Piepmeier added that the event should feature “a lot of big names in Charleston. The fundraising all happened before the event,” Piepmeier says, noting that Yes! I’m a Feminist has close to 200 sponsors. “The party isn’t really there to raise money. The party is there to raise awareness and to let people who identify as feminists get to know who else is in Charleston.” But if you show up and still want to give to the cause, they’ll gladly take it.
