Wife of WTMA host dies after struggle with cancer

Southcoast Community Bank accepting donations to help Todd family

Mary Todd, the wife of radio talk show host Richard Todd, passed away this morning after surviving more than three years of cancer and treatments.

"Even through her illness at the very end, she wanted to put her son first," says John Quincy, producer of Richard Todd's Morning Buzz show on 1250 WTMA. "When regular people would have been thinking about themselves, she was concerned about her son having one good Christmas."

Listeners of the Morning Buzz called to offer their condolences to the family on the air this morning as radio station employees filled in at the microphone. Richard had been open about his family's struggles since his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2008, reminding listeners to wear pink for breast cancer awareness every October. Last October, Mary came on the air to talk about her struggle, and she joined other breast cancer survivors onstage at the Family Circle Tennis Center before the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. She received a third beaded necklace as a symbol of her third year of survival.

By last year, Quincy says the cancer had spread to Mary's brain and liver. She died around 2:30 a.m. at a hospice center in Mt. Pleasant. She is survived by her husband and her nine-year-old son, Tyler.

If you are interested in helping the Todd family recover the cost of medical treatments, you can donate to the Mary Todd Fund by cash or check at any Southcoast Community Bank.
