Weekend Round-up: After the Flood

The best events in Charleston Aug. 31-Sept. 2

After the torrential downpour this week, looks like there is some promising weather ahead (hey, less than 40% chance of rain – we’ll take it). So why not show the sun some appreciation for making an appearance by spending a weekend outdoors? Here are some of the best outdoors events this weekend and a couple indoor ones, just so we don’t jinx it.

If an event at a castle weren’t called a roundtable, we’d probably raise our eyebrows at the missed opportunity. Join the organic wellness experts of Miessence at the Mugdock Castle on Sullivan’s for The Organic Roundtable, a set of presentations on health and organic products. You’ll get to try fresh juices and vegan superfoods with other environmental enthusiasts as you discuss why organic matters. Advanced ticket purchase required.

If you’re looking for a more active version of a sunset cruise, join Coastal Expeditions for their Folly Creek Blue Moon Tour. This Friday marks the second full moon in August, an infrequent celestial event that lends itself to the term “Once in a blue moon.” Find out more about this lunar rarity on this naturalist-led kayak tour.

The full moon will also light up the dance floor at the Moonlight Mixer at the pier on Folly Beach. DJ Jim Bowers will be playing oldies and beach music all night long, giving you an opportunity to finally learn to do the Charleston. Once you get your practice in, enter the shag competition at the Edisto Beach Music and Shag Fest. There will be an arts and crafts fair beginning at noon and live music playing throughout the day. Competition starts at 9pm and the festival runs Friday and Saturday.

Nothing says Saturday in the South like drinking some sweet tea on the porch. To upgrade the fun, let’s make that sweet tea some Firefly vodka and kick back on the patio at Irvin-House Vineyards. This weeks installment of Sippin’ Saturdays will include local food trucks and music by Farm on Fire with Cotton Blue Band. Purchase some of the vineyard’s own vintages by the glass or the bottle. Or, for just six bucks you can taste 6 flavors of Firefly vodka and Sea Island Rums in the distillery. The glass and entertainment is free and you may even get to see some of their adorable bunnies.

Once you’ve relaxed the afternoon away, get ready for a big Broadway night out. Legally Blonde: The Musical will be playing all weekend at the Dock Street Theatre. Come laugh with the pink princess and all her law school antics.

When Sunday rolls around, take it easy at the Lowcountry Wine & Beer Festival. Freshfields Village is hosting the sixth round of the festival to benefit the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic. Try craft beer and fine wines from around the world while enjoying live music by the soulful Lilly B’. Graze at the Lowcountry buffet from Hege’s Restaurant and browse the selection at the silent auction where you can find items like an African safari and golf packages. Or head to Bowen's Island for their annual Labor Day Sunday Bash with music by w/ Momma and the Redemption Band, Cotton Blue, Smoky Weiner.
