Wando's real teens rep S.C. in regional theater competition

The Real World, Mt. Pleasant

Wando High School’s theater group placed second at the S.C. Theatre Association (SCTA) convention at Converse College earlier this month. They were also awarded the Oustanding Technical award, and the cast of 13 was named an All-Star Cast. The group, made up of members of the honors theater class, will go on to compete in the Regional Competition in Atlanta in March. They’ll be one of two teams representing S.C.

Wando premiered Neal Lerner’s the real teens in Charleston on Nov. 10. The original play is a glimpse into the lives of everyday teens. Director Lori Carroll decided to commission a piece after struggling to find something that fit her students.

“Most of the plays written by and for teenagers are ‘issue’ plays, about troubled students, or they are just silly comedies,” Carroll says in a release. “Neal was able to capture the voices of ‘typical’ kids without making them stereotypical.”
