Victim of Folly Road bike fatality was the driver in Skinful felony DUI

Matthew Reid Fisher sideswiped car before striking another

The 31-year-old cyclist who died yesterday on Folly Road was the driver of a car that struck and killed a pedestrian at last year's Skinful Halloween party, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office confirms.

Matthew Reid Fisher, 31, reportedly sideswiped an SUV on Folly Road yesterday. The collision caused him to lose control of his bike and led to him being hit by a second vehicle. The accident occurred at approximately 4:56 p.m. Thursday.

In October, Fisher was charged with a felony DUI in connection with the death of Beau James Froehlich, an attendee at Skinful.

According to Maj. Jim Brady of the Charleston County Sheriff's Department, law enforcement believes that "both individuals had just left the Skinful Halloween event held at 1575 Folly Road, based on initial statements made to investigators on scene" when the accident occurred. The report notes that Fisher "was traveling south on Folly Road when he struck the victim who was walking in the roadway."

When deputies arrived, an officer "spoke with the suspect and observed that his speech was slurred" and "he had bloodshot, watery eyes and an odor of a consumed alcoholic beverage about his person."

The sheriff's department incident report also claims that Fisher has a prior DUI from 2002.

According to Fisher's attorney, David Aylor, the case is still pending. Prior to yesterday's accident, no trial date had been set.
