After a successful turnout at Charleston’s inaugural Food Truck Rodeo in March, the trendy trucks gathered once again to bring food to the masses at Mixson on Sunday. The adorable green housing development in North Charleston’s historic Park Circle district and the Charleston Food Truck Federation played host to many of the same food trucks from the first Rodeo, including Hello My Name is BBQ, Roti Rolls, Little Blue Brunch Truck, and GeeChee Island Mobile Kitchen. New to the scene were Pot Kettle Black and Happy Camper Snoballs, with adult libations provided by Social Wine Bar.
Cars lined the road leading up to Mixson and crowds gathered on the green by the barn where the food trucks were parked. With such an unexpectedly large turn-out, long lines made it difficult to try samplings from each vendor — each truck averaged about an hour wait. Not exactly fast food. However, the Beer Braised BBQ Pork on Brioche and Cole Slaw from Hello My Name is BBQ was well worth the wait.
I found the best system was to order from my first choice, then jump in a smaller line at a second truck while I waited for my name to be called from the first truck. While my sandwich was being cooked to order, I journeyed over to Pot Kettle Black to order a refreshing glass of lemonade. I then joined my friend at Roti Rolls after I had snagged my sandwich to patiently await her Funky Farmer and Spicy Kale. Roti Rolls was probably the busiest food truck of the bunch — they even had to stop taking orders at one point in order to fulfill the others that were backing up.
Such a large turnout speaks volumes about how popular the Food Trucking trend has become. Despite the long waits, most people were in good spirits and seemed to enjoy themselves, whether dancing to music in the barn or sitting in the designated picnic area with their family and friends enjoying their food. The Food Truck Rodeo is definitely something everyone should try, and I think after the food trucks get their sea legs, they’ll be ready to take on the next rodeo.
