Ken Vedrinski went from being a celebrated chef at the only five-star restaurant in all of South Carolina (the Dining Room at Woodlands) to being the celebrated chef/restaurateur at downtown’s most beloved trattoria in the ’hood. At Lucca he makes fresh pasta and serves exquisite dishes using impeccable seafood, produce, and meats from the nearby lands and waters. He goes back k to the old country to source beautiful wines, fruity olive oils, sultry cheeses, and cured meats. He continues to wow us on a regular basis. Deeper flavors reign on the late winter menu with a scaloppini of Sonoma duck paired with dried figs and cracklings, thick bucatini topped with mushrooms, crispy guanciale, a soft egg, and browned goat butter, and — one of our all-time favorite treats — warm cauliflower sformatino. Vedrinski is a master of the craft and deserves to be on your must-eat list, no matter if you’ve been here once or a hundred times. His is the pasta to which we compare all others. —Stephanie Barna
