Not to be confused with the debut single by glitzy pop star Ke$ha, New York-based, Berlin-inspired combo Tik Tok leans more toward experimental klezmer, gypsy jazz, and vintage blues than anything resembling contemporary Top 40. But it’s not a ridiculous stretch to say that the group’s exotic and eclectic mix of styles might be just as danceable as anything on today’s radio charts. The core members of the band — multi-instrumentalists Carlos Rosanegra, Mike Ellison, and Noah Block-Harley — founded Tik Tok Laboratories in 2009 as a workshop where they could study, emulate, and reinterpret various folk traditions. They dabble in American blues, jazz, and country, and stretch into to flamenco and Eastern European folk and gypsy music. At times, the sound of their tinkering percussion resembles the sound of someone breaking into a grandfather clock. Their third album is set to be released on Copenhagen’s Wind Some Lose Some Records.
