Theatre 99 has been Charleston’s home for comedy since they opened their doors back in 2000, and now it’s time to celebrate their influence on the community as the theater turns 12 years old. Founded by The Have Nots!, Theatre 99 produced its first Piccolo Fringe Festival in 2001 and birthed the Charleston Comedy Festival in 2004. Today, these annual events have become some of the highlights of the year. “This show is going to be like a regular weekend show, but on steroids,” says Theatre 99 co-founder Greg Tavares of the birthday festivities. “Usually we do shows with two acts, but this will be a three-act show. We will have the crew that does the Wednesday shows start off the night, then we’ll do a short-form show in the middle with our improv games and things like that, and then we will end with our weekend cast. We’ll be having close to a total of 20 performers.” Stay and hang out afterward to reminisce about the theater with the people who have been there from the beginning. “This show will be wonderful example of how Theatre 99 has grown from three people in 2000 to having now over 50 active cast members,” says co-founder Brandy Sullivan.
