New owners have put serious effort into refurbishing this Mt. Pleasant venue with dazzling results. The kitchen eschews the greasy bar grub and wings of its predecessor in favor of unique gourmet burgers, wraps, and Mediterranean-style appetizers. Designed by Chef Daniel Adam Nurick, the menu emphasizes aged cheeses, imported olives, local herbs and greens, and fresh produce. The Charleston Burger is handmade to order from hormone-free, grass-fed black Angus and topped with housemade pimento cheese, vine-ripened tomato jam, and a fried green tomato. Try the falafel, stuffed with cucumber, tahini, and chopped Israeli salad, or opt for the house pizza, an unusual version made with a cracker-like crust, a whipped-ricotta base, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, saba, sea salt, and fresh rosemary. The new Village Tavern continues to present live music five nights a week, but in a more stripped-down acoustic vibe, making for an easy weeknight out. —T. Ballard Lesemann , Dish (Summer 2011)
