There was plenty to do during the City Paper’s self-imposed hiatus. New Year’s Eve was crazy in Charleston, as usual, beginning with the art show New Year’s Revolution 2 at the new 10 Storehouse Row facility at the Old Navy Base in North Charleston. Kevin Taylor returned for the holidays to curate this show, which included artists such as Shepard Fairey , Bea Aaronson , John Pundt , Will Eskridge , Lauren Wong , Mulletpony, and Steve Pomberg. Palmetto Brewery was on hand to provide libations, and North Chuck’s Soul Vegetarian had some killer mac & cheese. Clint4 , A Decent Animal , and DJ Pip performed throughout the night while partiers browsed the gallery space.
New Year’s Day, although not as chilly as previous years, was still time for the annual Polar Bear Plunge. Polar people gathered at both Snapper Jack’s on Folly Beach and Dunleavy’s Pub on Sullivan’s Island, so there was no excuse for not joining in. Unless, like me, you find the idea of jumping into icy cold water highly unappealing. Props to those who participated, earning money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Special Olympics , respectively.
This past Saturday, Upper Deck-ers were treated to White Boy Crazy ’s antics. When Taylor returns to town, he usually stages a variety of events that never disappoint.
On Sunday afternoon, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens hosted the third Trot for the Cure, a fund-raiser for canine cancer research. AmeriCorps served up Southern Que-N-Stew’s barbecue, vendors such as Earth Fare gave out samples, and veterinarians were on site to answer doggy health questions.
