OtherBrother Entertainment

Motown bands, party bands, bluegrass bands — OtherBrother Entertainment can cover practically any musical genre you can think of. The company supplies its clients with a long list of wedding bands and musicians, and they'll work within a couple's budget to come up with options. Through OtherBrother, you could hire notable Charleston acts like the Blue Dogs and Plane Jane or DJs like 95SX's Joey Girard and DJ Moo Moo. They also specialize in what owner and performer Bryan Mahanes calls "boutique DJs."

"Our DJs are turntable-style DJs, which means that they mix music and have real club DJ skills," Mahanes says. "I'm finding that people are really liking that sort of style at their weddings, because the DJs can create a really fun dancing atmosphere that's a nonstop feel or vibe."

Mahanes suggests couples review a band's song list before they make a decision — the more they enjoy the list, the more likely it is that they'll enjoy the band's set at their reception. OtherBrother also offers uplighting and cafe lighting services to help set the mood; Mahanes says the latter is a big trend right now in both indoor and outdoor venues. "It just creates a really festive, romantic look," he says.

When you first meet with OtherBrother, Mahanes and his crew will need to know the date of the wedding, the potential venue, and the number of guests. Then he'll want to hear your vision, whether it's for a massive, crazy party or a smaller, more intimate affair. Mahanes notes that the venue's requirements (how long the event can be, what you can do at the venue, etc.) may determine a lot of your final decisions.

OtherBrother typically books six to 12 months in advance, and since Charleston is such a popular wedding destination, Mahanes suggests couples explore Friday and Sunday options.

"If you find something in Charleston that you like, you can't book it soon enough," Mahanes says. "I've seen it happen a million times, whether it's a venue or a band. Somebody's interested and the next day or in two days it's gone because somebody was looking at the same thing."
