The Head and the Heart's self-titled debut got people talking and dancing, but it's the Seattle-based sextet's latest single that has fans clamoring to get their earbuds on the band's new album, Let's Be Still, which was released this past Tuesday. "Shake" is a catchy slice of the group's patented brand of upbeat folk-pop, and drummer Tyler Williams says the band knew it would be the first single off of the new album. "We were messing around in our practice space and a furniture maker came over and said the song was great," Williams says. "It was destined to be a single."
Although Let's Be Still just dropped, the band's upcoming tour dates began selling out months ago. "This is one of the first times things have ever sold out for us, so it's pretty amazing. We've never seen it this way before," Williams says.
With 35 shows booked for the remainder of the year with stops in the U.K., France, Canada, and all over the U.S., the Head and the Heart crew is excited to play at the Southern Ground Music and Food Festival. "We just played the Southern Ground Fest in Nashville, and it was cool to see and play for a lot more people — not to just the indie rock kids," Williams says.
For Williams and the gang, success has been relatively quick. In fact, the band's debut was a hit almost from the start. "When we first released the record, that was kind of when everything took off. We opened for Vampire Weekend at the Paramount in Seattle, and Sub Pop picked it up eight months later," Williams says. The Head and the Heart sold 280,000 copies of their self-titled debut, making the band one of Sub Pop's most successful newly signed artists in years.
This isn't the Head and the Heart's first trip to the Holy City. "We played the Music Farm opening for Dr. Dog, and it's been a mission of ours to come back ever since," Williams says.
As for now, Williams is eagerly awaiting the release of Let's Be Still, saying, "I'm excited to get it out and to have people listen to what we've been working on for the last two years."
