Vintage local band the Ferns were one of the more heralded acts in the Charleston band scene in the mid ’90s. The jangly pop-rock quartet played smart, melodic, pulsating original material that was very much in the vein of early R.E.M., the Smithereens, the Pixies, and Pavement. The band resurfaced last fall, playing a surprise set at local artist and graphic designer Gil Shuler’s annual Dog Party on Johns Island. Lead singer/guitarist Tim Kane, guitarist Chris Metts, and bassist Richard Hussey welcomed guest drummer Tommy Hamer for a solid set. The quartet shares the stage at the Tin Roof with the Common Granckles this week.
