The Coastal Carolina Fair celebrates its 53rd anniversary this year at the Exchange Park in Ladson with an array of musical concerts at the Lakefront Stage mini-amphitheater. This year's series kicks off with a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Thurs. Oct. 29 by Paul Revere & The Raiders (a '60s garage-pop band whose biggest radio hit was 1971's "Indian Reservation").
On Halloween, contemporary country act Lady Antebellum performs at 8 p.m. Additional acts include veteran soul/R&B singer Percy Sledge (remember 1966's "When a Man Loves a Woman"); country singers Tracy Bird, Neal McCoy, Julianne Hough, and Jake Owen; vintage three-part harmony vocal group The Lettermen; and Charlotte-based beach music/soul legend General Johnson & The Chairman of the Board.
Charleston's very own guitar-pop band The Explorers Club is scheduled to perform on the Parkway Stage at 9:30 p.m. on Fri. Oct. 30 after the Fair's big fireworks show.
"It's at the stage that's to the right of the entrance, says keyboardist Stefan Rogenmoser. "It's not the Lakefront Stage; it's the other one. We played the same stage last year, and it was just short of a disaster. It was the night after the election. There were some odd acts before us on the same stage. There were some kids dancing in Wizard of Oz costumes or something weird like that. It had rained for three days, so we were slipping on the cold, wet grass loading in. But what made it disastrous was in the middle of our set they began shooting off three days worth of fireworks not far behind it us. The fireworks killed our sound. So we turned up. The fireworks kept on shooting and booming in the sky behind us. We quickly decided to change up our set and play our loudest fastest songs. So we turned up more and rocked our asses off. By the time we got to our last song or two the fireworks had stopped. That's why we've made sure to play after the fireworks this year, no matter how long we have to wait."
