The Drowsy Chaperone

When: Jan. 21-Feb. 12 2011

It’s been three years since the Company Company and the Village Repertory Company have collaborated on a musical since their production of Gypsy. But they’re back with a good one: The Drowsy Chaperone. The original Broadway production opened in 2006 and won five Tonys that year, including for Best Book and Best Original Score. And the Company Company’s Producing Director Bill Schlitt thinks it’s one of the best shows to come out in the last 10 to 15 years. Schlitt stars as the “Man in Chair,” an obsessive fan of old musicals who imagines the performers coming to life in his apartment. He puts on a recording of The Drowsy Chaperone, which tells the story of Janet Van De Graaff, the star of Feldzieg’s Folllies who’s about to marry oil tycoon Robert Martin. Her boss Feldzieg isn’t happy about this and hires Aldolpho to seduce Janet. “We’re fielding a stronger cast than I think we’ve ever fielded for this kind of project,” says Schlitt. —Susan Cohen
