Charleston Fashion Week can be an exciting time, but amidst the runway shows, it’s hard to find clothes that people really wear. That’s where the Big Mix comes in. The event celebrates independent clothiers that produce T-shirts, book bags, fitted hats, and other accessories for the stylish everyman. Presented by KJ Kearney, founder of H1gher Learning, the event showcases the unique Southern streetwear style that has stretched its influence as far as Texas and Tennessee. “Our event is for people who appreciate unique and independent style,” says Kearney “The style we present isn’t necessarily for those who would walk a runway.” Kearney will be moderating a panel discussion exploring the meaning of Southern streetwear style and culture. The panel includes the owner of Phat Kaps Boutique, the owner of Kosmic Kickz, the lead graphic designer for XLarge US, and the co-founder of the SpeakEazy. Funds and nonperishable items raised will be donated to Lowcountry Food Bank. The event will also host an after-party from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. at Tivoli with a cash bar and DJ Bird Flu.
