The best unpublished City Paper photos of 2013

As we close 2013 and open 2014, I wanted to look back at the year that was. Here at the City Paper, many photos don't make the journey from the camera to our viewers. I wanted to share with Charleston some of my favorite photos that were left on the cutting room floor. Not that these images weren't quality shots, but for any number of reasons, they were left in purgatory on the City Paper servers. I am here to bring them to you, in no particular order. So, enjoy.


For the final week of Spoleto, we wanted a totally unique cover. The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Diety had great reviews and a full-size wrestling rink in the smallish PURE Theatre. This was a great photo session at Pixel Studios. Thankfully, Christian Dubose was up for some action.>


And for some obligatory food porn. Shooting food is up there for my number one. These chicken and waffles from A.C.'s were straight forward and delicious. The chix n' waffs feature in DISH Winter 2013 was my favorite DISH assignment to date. You might even see another image later on...


Tank Jackson, Pig Farmer. This man loves his pigs, and this nine-day-old piglet shared the enthusiasm.


Robert Lange and crew were pumped when Charleston voted them 'Best Art Gallery in the World' in 2013.


Nathan Durfee knows something about Robert Lange Studios--his work is in steady rotation at the Queen Street space.


This lobster roll at Sweeney's is worth the drive to Johns Island and was gladly engulfed by yours truly at the end of the photo shoot.


This came out of shoot with a 6 a.m. call time for the S3 Beach Guide. We loved this image from Isle of Palms. Those early wake up calls are worth it. It is when light is the best.


From what was Speakeasy, this shot of Jon Calo adding bitters to one of his cocktails brings nostalgia from the little bar located at 215 East Bay. Shot for DISH in January 2013.


A recent cover shoot with Brother Speed, this image never made the pages of City Paper, but there's no doubt that I will remember this man. Only those who have crossed his path could really understand.


Another scene from DISH Winter 2013. The School House on the Rock at the Bar at Husk combines palm sugar and unsweetened whipped cream.


Dirt Spring 2013 led Assistant Editor Elizabeth Pandolfi and me to Revival Farms just out side of Slyvania, Ga. Catherine Compton and Bradley Taylor were genuinely gracious people.


Ah, La Forchette. How I miss thee. For our Spoleto guide, I was fortunate enough to enjoy these mussels with a beautiful Sancerre.


We wanted to go '70s vintage for the 2013 Summer Guide. What is better than Bo Derek's classic? (This re-creation without braids.)


My first visit to Rebekah Jacob's gallery was on this assignment, and we spent over an hour talking art. The space is as lovely as Jacob's commitment to bringing word-class art to Charleston.


Our Style Issue awarded Johnny Battles best male tattoos. Johnny was apprehensive to get in front of the camera sans shirt, but this dramatic portrait captures Battles' light side.


For best hair, Lily Slay brought four different wigs to the studio. We only shot this purple wig for a split second, and this shot is also the only time we used the fan.


Even working with the variety of people that were included in our superlatives, Carrie Schwabb commanded the camera.


Terry Fox was our final subject for the Style issue. He retained his dapperness even after waiting an hour for his turn.


My stomach is growling just looking at this image of the Cha Ca Ha Hanoi at Xiao Bao Biscuit.


If you are hungry, Mike Lata is ready to serve you up a Fiesta Omelet at Waffle House. Believe it or not, this was his third try to execute the Waffle House technique.


So hungry. This chicken and waffles shot from Early Bird Diner was an outtake from DISH Winter 2013.


The Ultimate Brunch in DISH Summer 2013, brought 12 different items into focus. All the dishes were spectacular, but if you haven't had the peanut butter and banana french toast at the Tattooed Moose, do yourself a favor. Pictured left center.


Warehouse on Spring Street is one of my personal favorite new spots to go downtown, and I don't think I'm the only one. This image is of the two guys behind the new establishment, Joey Rinaldi and James B. Groftzinger.


The City Paper story on Charleston sign painters gave me the sincere pleasure of getting to know Charles Desaussure. Charles' work can be seen on the side of Martha Lou's. Desaussure died of cancer this past summer, but there's no doubt these were the hands of a painter.


On lighter note, who doesn't love puppies?

Best Local Hip-Hop Artist Righchus keeping it cool.


A venture to McClellanville led me to Stephanie Waldron. Waldron creates the environmental sets for such movies as Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves, and The Help. She was one of the most down-to-earth people I met in 2013.


An outtake from my shoot with Mado Smith. I've had his album Tenderfoot in my CD player on a constant rotation since our meeting.


The talented Mr. Jenkins — one of the most interesting individuals I encountered this year. His imagination knows no boundary.


The quaint setting of Cannon Park complimented this shoot with the wonderful Elise Testone for our CIty Paper Music Awards. Testone took home Blues and Funk Artist of the Year.


Raised on Sol Legare, James Brown has an understanding and passion for the 54th Massachusetts that hits home.


John McWilliams and Nancy Marshall in their McClellanville studio. These photographers have been together for 35 years, and they continue to work the old-fashion way, with film.


I snapped this image of Mike Lata shortly after The Ordinary opened to much acclaim. The large windows in the renovated bank building offer beautiful natural light.
