Adam Avery, the charismatic brewmaster and president of Colorado’s busy Avery Brewing Company, is a frequent visitor to Charleston. In recent years, he’s hosted high-gravity beer dinners, enthusiastic meet-and-greets, in-store tastings, and special get-togethers. He returns this week, teaming up with local distribution company AdVintage to show off some new ales and lagers. Avery makes a stop at the newly opened House of Brews in Mt. Pleasant as part of a “Meet the Brewer Happy Hour” between 4-6 p.m. before heading over to the main event at Voodoo in West Ashley. In an unusual format, the early-evening tasting session offers 15 beers in five three-glass flights. The menu ranges from classic styles to wild new barrel-aged specialties and a few very strong ales at staggering levels of alcohol content. “This is a very unique and special event that has not occurred since the brand was launched in S.C. in 2006,” says AdVintage sales manager Casey Lee. “Adam has dug into his cellar and is bringing vintage, barrel-aged specialty beers and sours to complement the already extensive lineup of beers.” The five flights include Avery Big Beers (pilsner, wheat ale, and pale ale), the Barrel-Aged Series (sour ales and a pumpkin ale, aged in liquor or wine barrels), the Holy Trinity of Ales (two Trappist-style ales and a barleywine), the Dictators Series (high-gravity IPA, Oktoberfest, and imperial stout), and the Demons of Ale (unusually strong ales and stouts). It’s an impressive lineup aimed at the hardiest beer enthusiasts. Seating is limited. Call Voodoo for reservations.
