Here’s something we bet you didn’t learn in history class: George Washington wasn’t the first president. Although he was the first elected under the United States Constitution, there were actually 14 other presidents appointed under the Continental Congress and the Articles of Confederation. Some you’ll probably know, like John Hancock, and some you may have never heard of, like Peyton Randolph. Now through April, you can learn about these men and see authentic documents they penned during the late 1700s. There’s a strong local connection, too, says Associate Director Roy Smith. “This exhibit is especially exciting because two of the Presidents are actually from Charleston, Henry Middleton and Henry Laurens.” Looks like Francis Marion will finally have some competition for his spot as the Lowcountry’s most famous Revolutionary.
