When James Island’s Midtown Productions put on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Tell Me On a Sunday last fall, City Paper reviewer Jon Santiago was dazzled by leading lady Mary Fishburne. Named “One to Watch” in City Paper’s 2012 Fall Arts Issue, Fishburne had already made a name for herself in Charleston’s theater scene after just a year in the Lowcountry.

In this particular production, the Vanderbilt grad stars as a young British hat designer trying to make her way in New York (something Fishburne could certainly relate to after her own NYC stint). She spends most of the play couch-surfing, in a constant search for a green card ... and, of course, true love. She goes through a string of guys (a drummer, a “movie guy,” a software salesman, and a married man) as we watch her transform from ingenue to adult.

In his review, Santiago wrote, “Fishburne handles the daunting challenge of the one-woman show (75 minute long, no intermission) with so much energy, charm, and style that she’s a slam dunk for the category ‘Unforgettable.’"
