Tangled Dreams of Knots and Leaves represents a coming of age for local artist Nathan Durfee. His newest exhibit is framed by a collection of characters created throughout Durfee’s career, all belonging to the same bloodline, with the star of the show being Mr. Abrordeer, a man with trees for hair. Although many have suspected that Maurice Sendak, creator of Where the Wild Things Are, had to have been in Durfee’s subconscious, he says he was more drawn to English comic book artist Jamie Hewlett, who is best known for his work with the band Gorillaz (he co-created the virtual band of cartoon characters). There will be 11 collaborative pieces, done with Megan Lange, at the exhibit; Lange created the backgrounds, then Durfee painted his characters in her atmosphere. “She really inspired me to start fleshing out my world,” Durfee says. He has also been experimenting with new ways of framing his pieces — large antlers are involved, but we will say no more.
