Spoleto at the Avery

A series of workshops, panels, and conversations with African-American artists at Spoleto 2008

What is it? A series of workshops, panels, and conversations with African-American artists at Spoleto 2008.

Why see it? Including an Amistad workshop (May 22 at 5:30 p.m.) that explores the process of creating art based on historic events and a sit-down with renowned jazz artist Cyrus Chestnut (May 28 at 5 p.m.), the series offers festival attendees the chance to get up close and personal with their favorite performers. Marc Bamuthi Joseph will explore the "intersection of spoken word and movement" in another free workshop (May 30 at 5 p.m.; registration required). There's also a roundtable on the legal aspects of the Amistad case, led by Charleston attorney Robert Rosen (May 31 at 3 p.m.).

Who should go? Each event is different, and festival-goers with a specific interest in an act will enjoy the opportunity to hear their stories.
