We’ve got spirit yes we do, we’ve got spirit how bout you? Thankfully the days of cheerleaders trying to rouse school spirit are long gone for us, and we’ve learned to cheer for ourselves. But that doesn’t mean that sometimes we don’t like a good pep rally, especially one for communal support. On Thursday, join We Are Family at the rally supporting LGBT youth and take a stand against bullying. Wear purple in solidarity as you listen to Laverne Cox from Orange is the New Black talk about being a transgender woman in show business. Melissa Moore, executive director of We Are Family, talks about the importance of Cox coming to town. She says, “Much of the conversation about equality centers on the rights of same-gender couples ... These are all important issues, but the voices of trans folks, youth in particular, get drowned out.” Not to get too heavy and sentimental, but times are tough and people can be mean, which is why Spirit Day is a nice reminder to be a cheerleader for humanity. OK, we’ll stop with the kumbaya moment.
