A Piccolo Spoleto event featuring notable writers, including Cassandra King, Ron Daise and Brett Lott, who have captured the essence of “Southern-ness,” the 2009 Festival celebrates the literary accomplishments of the region. Sponsored by the Charleston Library Society. (1hr.)
WHAT IS IT? A celebration of writers who have captured the essence of Southern culture in their writings, as well as a recognition of the literary accomplishments of the South. Notable writers include best-selling novelist Cassandra King, fourth-generation Gullah writer Ron Daise, Anne Rivers Siddons, and Oprah fave and best-selling author Bret Lott (pictured).
WHY SEE IT? This will be a fabulous showcase of Southern literary talent and a killer opportunity to meet some of your favorite writers. That and it’s rare to hear the writers you love speaking in their own voices for a change — and not the voices we the readers give them when we read their words. Now’s the time to let the authors speak for themselves.
WHO SHOULD GO? Appreciators of literature and Southern literature, avid readers, lovers of books. Also fans of Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, and Wayne Newton. Well, maybe not lil’ Wayne. Danke schoen! (Signe Pike)
