Southeastern Beard and Moustache Championship
Sat., May 25, 7 p.m. 2013
If spending Memorial Day weekend shaking out your summer whites isn’t your idea of a good time, we’ve got a slightly grungier idea for you. Head to the Music Farm on Saturday for the Southeastern Beard and Moustache Championships, hosted by the Holy City Beard and Moustache Society. They’ve hosted this competition for the past three years, drawing contestants from across the nation — including some who have been featured on the IFC reality show Whisker Wars. Last year’s competition drew more than 150 contestants and 600 spectators, and organizer Paul Roof (who boasts a pretty impressive beard himself) thinkS this year could be even bigger. “Our goal is to fill it out,” he says. “I think it will be our best yet.” Contestants have been known to get impressively creative with their beards, especially the ladies’ artificial ones. “One girl took her friends’ dreads and they shaved them off and she glued them to her face,” Roof says. One thing we know is that this year’s beards and mustaches better be stylin’, because Charleston Fashion Week founder Ayoka Lucas will be one of the judges. The weekend kicks off with a welcome pre-party on Friday at the Recovery Room, and continues with a barbecue brunch on Saturday at Home Team BBQ in West Ashley. Proceeds for the competition will support Lowcountry Women with Wings, which offers resources for women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and their families.
