South Atlantic League Home Run Derby
Sat., June 9, 5:15 p.m. and Mon., June 18, 11 a.m. 2012
Looking to be part of history next week? Then head to the USS Yorktown, where the South Atlantic League Home Run Derby may very well be the first-ever home run derby to take place on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. “The Yorktown is an iconic thing,” says Sean Houston, the director of the Charleston RiverDogs media relations department. “People come from out of town to see it.” Hosted by the RiverDogs, the Home Run Derby will be held Monday morning and the championship round will be held Tuesday evening. “It’s a nice way for the RiverDogs and the All-Star Game to showcase the city and some of the great things about the area,” Houston says. Ten Home Run Derby winners — five from the Northern Division and five from the Southern Division — will compete by taking 10 swings each in an inflatable batting cage situated on the flight deck. Four players from the Home Run Derby will be chosen to compete in Tuesday’s championship at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Stadium. The four will be decided by the Coast Guard, who will determine the longest homers of the bunch. If you want to watch Monday’s festivities, all you have to do is show up to the Yorktown and mention the All-Star Game to get in free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the Yorktown’s snack bar.
