Take a whack at RiverDogs season opener

The season begins Thursday

Baseball fans, rejoice. The RiverDogs' season starts on Thursday.  Working with their "Be Your Own Fan" promotion, the team promises to bring excitement and some talented players onto the diamond.

This season presents a few firsts for some team members. Former major leaguer Greg Colbrunn, who served three years as hitting coach, is now team manager. “Our focus is on getting better,” says Colbrunn. “It’s not so much about winning, it’s about developing the players so they can move on and get into the big leagues.”

Former Clemson Tigers right-handed pitcher Graham Stoneburner and former USC Gamecocks outfielder Mack DeAngelo will also make their debut this season. Both played with the Staten Island Yankees in 2009 before they were drafted to the RiverDogs. “We’re pretty excited,” said Stonebrunner. “This’ll be our first pro game.” Although they come from rival schools — slinging a few snappy comments about the other’s alma mater every now and then — Stoneburner and DeAngelo are said to work well as teammates. “I was really excited to hear that I was going to be on the same team with [DeAngelo],” says Stonebrunner. But, of course, the rivalry’s still there. “Everyone else is getting better,” says DeAngelo. “So you have to do even more to stay one step ahead.”

The season opener is April 8 at 7:05 p.m. against the Lexington Legends. For more information, visit their website.
