Theatre 99 has made a name for itself with its improv shows, but while we’ve been going to Laugh for a Lincoln non-stop over the years, Theatre 99 has recently stepped up their sketch comedy game. And on Thursday, a new local sketch comedy troupe premieres. John R. Brennan, Jason Groce, and Jessica Mickey make up The Bystanders. The trio has worked the improv scene for years and wanted to change it up a bit. “We’ve written material out of doing improv comedy, so we would take scenes, write them down, and punch them up,” says Brennan. “It’s closer to a sketch comedy revue.” Small Talk is their first show, and it’ll cover growing up, making connections with others, and why you should always go ahead and get the mayo — we’re not sure about the last part. For this show, they’ve adopted Theatre 99-ers Andy Livengood and Ali Sylvester. The troupe hopes to do a couple of other sketch comedy shows in the future.
