Call them shorts if you want to, but size doesn’t matter to Midtown/Sheri Grace Productions as they cram big laughs into tiny packages in their series of 10-minute (or so) plays. Each evening of Shorts! will feature an hour and a half of short plays, half of which have been written by local playwrights, while the other half are productions from famous playwrights like Tennessee Williams, John Patrick Shanley, and Arthur Miller. “Thematically, the plays are united in that they deal with relationships, but in terms of characters and setting, each one stands alone,” director Douglas Clinton says. “The plays are a mix of comedy and drama, and they’re moving in equal measure.” A published playwright himself, Clinton heads up a group of five other directors overseeing the talents of 15 local actors, from seasoned veterans to graduates of the Charleston Acting Studio’s Adult Acting Workshops who will be making their stage debuts. Part of the studio’s Outside the Box Series, the production is “an opportunity to bring new talent to the stage, and audiences will get the opportunity to see a lot of people they haven’t seen onstage in Charleston before,” Clinton says.
