It’s no coincidence that red ribbons go perfectly with the holiday color scheme. Start off the season of giving right with Lowcountry AIDS Services’ yearly fundraiser Shopping with Friends, which benefits HIV/AIDS research. “It’s still an epidemic, one that hasn’t gone away,” says Brad Childs of LAS. “It’s really because of events like these and our supporting retailers that we are able to get awareness out about the ongoing struggle with AIDS/HIV.” To get an early start on the weekend, head to Mt. Pleasant on Friday evening for the kick-off party at Gwynn’s. You’ll be able to shop for their stylish goods while sipping tasty cocktails. A $10 donation isn’t required but is greatly appreciated, and a $20 one will get you up to $40 in discounts. Then on Saturday, enjoy a leisurely brunch at the Riviera Theatre as you bid on prizes like a trip to New Orleans or VIP tickets to a filming of American Idol. But the party doesn’t end there. Once the bidding closes and your appetite is satisfied, fit in some Christmas shopping at the more than 100 retailers who have pledged to donate 10 percent of all proceeds from the day to LAS. Your conscience will thank you, and those affected by HIV/AIDS in the Lowcountry will too.
