The annual Jazz Artists of Charleston fundraiser See Jazz will unveil the 2010 JAC Jazz Series artwork by Nathan Durfee. He says he’s been involved with the organization for a couple years now, designing posters or album art and doing artwork for their Piccolo Jazz series. Durfee will present a series of ink drawings based off jazz instruments, inspired by this year’s theme of “Black & White.” He says he was influenced by the improvisation of jazz; in his pieces, he tries to express the feel of each instrument as it’s played. “With most of my work, there is an element of planning and refinement. I have a goal in mind when I’m working on the piece,” he says. “Ink drawings are a different story. Just like live jazz, you can’t go back and ‘redo’ what you’ve already done. There is an element of trust involved; you go with the flow, and the end product is more spontaneous and raw.” The exhibit also features works by Alice Keeney, Priscilla Thomas, Reese Moore, Ben Williams, Michael Moran, Nick Jenkins, Lisa Shimko, and others. Admission includes wine bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres. —Susan Cohen
