The Super Bowl is over and it’s time for soccer to have its day. Feb. 11 is your chance to check out the hottest high school soccer talent from all over the Lowcountry at the 28th Annual Rotary Club of Mt. Pleasant Soccer Classic. It’s like Summerville’s Sertoma Youth Football for soccer, only with less padding and more tackles. With 22 teams from local high schools like Wando, Bishop England, Hanahan, and Porter Gaud, the high school boys and girls will get a taste of the big leagues as they dig their cleats in at Blackbaud Stadium. “Everyone loves a sneak peak, and the Classic serves as one of the first times the players have been together on the field before they begin playing in their respective conferences,” says sponsorship chair Abbie Mobley. Rotarians will be serving up made-to-order hot dogs, burgers, and other concessions all day long, and all proceeds will benefit local causes like Backpack Buddies, a Lowcountry Food Bank program that fights childhood hunger by distributing backpacks bursting with nutritious foods. Your $4 admission provides two children with bags of food, making the Classic “so much more than just the awesome match ups on the field,” Mobley says.
